A Short Monsoon Diary

( āĻĒাāĻ ā§° āϏৈāϤে āĻ•াāĻŽ āϕ⧰া: ) 1. Look carefully at the diary entries for June 24-25, August 2 and March 23. Now write down the changes that happen as the rains progress from June to March.

( 24-25 āϜুāύ, 2 āφāĻ—āώ্āϟ āφ⧰ু 23 āĻŽাā§°্āϚ⧰ āĻŦাāĻŦে āĻĄাāϝ়েā§°ী āĻĒ্ā§°āĻŦিāώ্āϟিāĻŦোā§° āϏাā§ąāϧাāύে āϚাāĻ“āĻ•। āĻāϤিāϝ়া āϜুāύ⧰ āĻĒā§°া āĻŽাā§°্āϚāϞৈ āĻŦā§°āώুāĻŖ āφāĻ—āĻŦাāĻĸ়ি āĻ…āĻšাā§° āϞāĻ—ে āϞāĻ—ে āĻšোā§ąা āĻĒā§°িā§ąā§°্āϤāύāĻŦোā§° āϞিāĻ–ি ā§°াāĻ–āĻ•। )

Ans. On June 24, the monsoon mist covers the hills and blankets them in silence. June 25 brings genuine early monsoon rain. On August 2, the rain is in full swing. March 23 sees the end of winter and a rainbow appears in the sky after a heavy hailstorm.

2. Why did the grandmother ask the children not to kill the Chuchundar?

Ans.  The grandmother asked the children not to kill the Chuchundar because it was considered lucky. She said that it brought money.


3. What signs do we find in Nature which show that the monsoons are about to end?

Ans. The seeds of cobra lily turn red as monsoon departures. Flowers like wild balsam, begonias and ground orchids also appear.

( āϞেāĻ–āĻ•ে 'āϏ্āĻĒ্ā§°িং' āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāϟো āĻ•িāϝ় āĻŦ্āĻ¯ā§ąāĻšাā§° āϕ⧰িāĻ›ে? )

Ans.  The word 'springing' means to develop suddenly. The roof of the housewas corrugated tin and hole/leaks were uneven and thus the writer has used the word springing

(ii) How is the writer untouched by the rain?

( āĻŦā§°āώুāĻŖā§° āĻĻ্āĻŦাā§°া āϞেāĻ–āĻ• āĻ•েāύেāĻ•ৈ āĻ…āϏ্āĻĒৃāĻļ্āϝ? )

Ans. The writer was not getting completely wet by the rain as he was in the house. Thus, he was untouched by the rain.

(iii) How is the writer in touch with the rain at the same time?

( āĻāĻ•ে āϏāĻŽāϝ়āϤে āĻŦā§°āώুāĻŖā§° āϏৈāϤে āϞেāĻ–āĻ•āĻ•েāύেāĻ•ৈ āϏāĻŽ্āĻĒā§°্āĻ• āϤāφāĻ›ে? )

Ans.  The writer was in touch with the rain at the same time because he could feel the rain by listening to its drumming sound on the corrugated tin roof.

6. Mention a few things that can happen when there is endless rain for days together.

( āĻāĻ•েāϞāĻ—ে āĻ•েāχāĻŦাāĻĻিāύো āĻŦā§°āώুāĻŖ āĻš'āϞে āϘāϟিāĻŦ āĻĒā§°া āĻ•েāχāϟাāĻŽাāύ āĻ•āĻĨা āωāϞ্āϞেāĻ– āϕ⧰āĻ•। )

Ans. When there is endless rain for days together, everything becomes damp and soggy. There is no place for anybody to go to. The hillsides are lush as late monsoon flowers such as wild balsam, dahlias, begonias and ground orchids begin to appear.

7. What is the significance of cobra lily in relation to the monsoon season, its beginning and end?

( āĻŦাā§°িāώা āĻ‹āϤু, āχāϝ়াā§° āφ⧰āĻŽ্āĻ­āĻŖি āφ⧰ু āϏāĻŽাāĻĒ্āϤিā§° āϏāύ্āĻĻā§°্āĻ­āϤ āĻ•োāĻŦā§°া āϞিāϞিā§° āϤাā§ŽāĻĒā§°্āϝ āĻ•ি? )

Ans. The cobra lily signifies both the beginning and end of the monsoon. At the beginning of the monsoon season, it is the cobra lilies that rear first and it is in late June. During the end of the monsoon season, its seeds start to turn red.
