Secondary occupations are economic activities involved in the process of industrial production.

The importance of the fourth profession has increased as the system of production, trade and related services are gradually affected by globalization.

7. Write how economic development changes occupations.

Answer: Since a person's economic activities or occupations are related to economic conditions, it is natural that economic changes will also bring about changes in occupations. If industry develops in an agricultural area over time, some workers will be attracted from agriculture to industry. This means that some people employed in primary occupations will be newly employed in secondary occupations. This may be due to -

(a) The number of workers in agriculture may already be higher than required

(b) Income in secondary occupations may be relatively high.

In addition, industrial production will open up trade and commerce in the region and gradually employ some people in tertiary occupations. Thus, economic development or change can change people's occupations.

8. Give a brief overview of the changes in the field of professions in Assam.

Answer: Before the arrival of the British, the economic activities of the people of Assam were mainly limited to agriculture, fishing, minor forest resource extraction, domestic weaving etc. All these activities can be considered as primary occupations. The British introduced tea industry, mineral oil and coal based industries in the state. These employ local and imported workers. Thus, it can be said that the second profession was introduced in the state. With this, people gradually began to be employed in offices, businesses, educational institutions, hospitals, etc. After the country gained independence, a large number of people were employed in administrative and transport services. Thus, tertiary professions gradually expanded in the state. Recently, with the rapid expansion of banks, financial institutions, research institutions, communications and media, the number of workers in the fourth profession is also increasing. Thus, the social and economic changes that have taken place over time have brought about massive changes in the economic activities, ie the professional sector in our State as well as at home and abroad.
