Chapter- 4      Revathi’s Musical Plants    


1. Who was Revathi?
Answer: Revathi was a young girl who was a student of music. She loved music very much and spent her free time practising it. She was especially fond of playing the violin and improving her musical skills every day.

2. What musical instrument did Revathi play?
Answer: Revathi played the violin. It was her favourite musical instrument, and she enjoyed practising it regularly whenever she had free time.

3. When did Revathi play her violin?
Answer: Revathi played her violin whenever she was free from her studies and other work. She used her free time to practise music and improve her talent.

4. What was in front of Revathi’s house?
Answer: In front of Revathi’s house there was a small open courtyard. It was a quiet and pleasant place where she liked to sit and practise her violin.

Answer: In the courtyard there was a small cement bench where Revathi used to sit. There were also a few potted plants kept around the courtyard which made the place look beautiful.

Answer: Revathi sat on the small cement bench in the courtyard to practise her violin. From there she could watch the plants while enjoying the open air.

Answer: The pot near the wall contained balsam plants. These plants usually grow in gardens and have pink or white flowers.

Answer: The balsam plants were not looking healthy. Their appearance showed that something was wrong with them.

Answer: The leaves of the balsam plants were pale green in colour, which showed that the plants were weak and not growing properly.

Answer: The growth of the plants was stunted. This means that the plants were not growing normally and their development had slowed down.

Answer: Revathi remembered that she had learnt in her lower classes that plants need sunlight for proper and healthy growth.

Answer: While shifting the pot, an idea suddenly came to her mind. She thought of taking part in the ‘Best Plant’ contest that was going to be held in her colony.

Answer: The ‘Best Plant’ contest was going to be held in her colony among the residents of the area.

Answer: The contest was planned to be held a few weeks later.

Answer: After deciding to participate in the contest, Revathi watered the plants carefully and then sat on the bench and started playing her violin.

Answer: Every day Revathi sat on the bench in the courtyard and carefully observed her potted plants to see how they were growing.

Answer: After some days the plants started growing well. They looked healthy and stronger than before.

Answer: Revathi’s plants looked healthier and better than the other plants kept at the far end of the courtyard.

Answer: One day while playing her violin, Revathi noticed a strange movement in the plants. They slowly moved their stems as if they were reacting to something.

Answer: The plants bent slightly towards Revathi as she was playing the violin.

Answer: Revathi found it strange because there was no breeze at that time. Normally plants move because of wind, but this movement happened without any wind.

Answer: The next evening Revathi again played her violin and carefully watched the plants to see if the same thing would happen again.

Answer: While she was playing the violin, the plants again slowly bent towards her just like they had done the previous day.

Answer: Later Revathi played a different tune on her violin which had a quick rhythm.

Answer: When she played the quick rhythm, the plants turned away from her as if they did not like that kind of music.

30. How did Revathi feel after seeing the plants move?
Answer: Revathi felt very astonished and surprised when she saw the plants reacting to her music.
