Unit 7

The Digestive System

Q1. Define Digestive System?

Answer: The digestive system is a group of organs that work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and remove waste from the body. Digestion changes food into simple substances that the body can use for energy, growth, and repair.

The process of digestion is complex, and different diseases or disorders can affect it. Understanding the digestive system helps us maintain good health and recognize when medical care is needed.

Q2.What are the main functions of the digestive system?

Answer: The main functions of the digestive system are:

  1. Ingestion – The process of taking food into the mouth.
  2. Digestion – The breakdown of food into simple and soluble substances.
  3. Absorption – The passage of digested nutrients into the blood and lymph.
  4. Assimilation – The utilization of absorbed nutrients by body cells for energy, growth, and repair.
  5. Elimination – The removal of undigested and unwanted waste materials from the body.

Q3. What are the parts of the digestive system?

Answer: The digestive system consists of two main parts:

1. Gastrointestinal (GI) Tract

The gastrointestinal tract is a long muscular tube that extends from the mouth to the anus. It is responsible for digestion, absorption, and elimination of food.

The parts of the GI tract are:

Mouth – The starting point of digestion where food is chewed and mixed with saliva.

Esophagus – A muscular tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach.

Stomach – A muscular organ that stores and digests food with the help of gastric juices.

Small Intestine – The longest part of the digestive tract where most digestion and absorption take place.

Large Intestine – The final part of the digestive system that absorbs water and removes waste through the rectum and anus.

2. Biliary Tract (Accessory Organs)

The biliary tract helps in digestion by producing and releasing digestive fluids.

The accessory organs are:

Liver – Produces bile for fat digestion.

Gallbladder – Stores and concentrates bile.

Pancreas – Produces digestive enzymes and pancreatic juice.

Bile Ducts – Carry bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine.
