A neonate is a baby from birth up to 28 completed days of life.

Physical Characteristics
Weight
* Average birth weight is about 2.5 kg to 3.5 kg.
Length
* Average length is about 48 to 52 cm.
Head Circumference
* Usually 33 to 35 cm.
Chest Circumference
* Usually 30 to 33 cm.
Skin
* Skin is soft, pink and covered with vernix caseosa.
* Lanugo hair may be present.
Head
* Head is relatively large compared to body.
* Fontanelles are present.
Eyes
* Eyes are usually closed after birth.
* Pupillary reflex present.
Respiratory System
* Respiratory rate is about 30 to 60 breaths per minute.
* Breathing may be irregular.
Cardiovascular System
* Heart rate is about 120 to 160 beats per minute.
Temperature
* Normal body temperature is around 36.5°C to 37.5°C.
Abdomen
* Abdomen appears rounded and soft.
Genitalia
* Genital organs are fully formed.
