Chapter - 4

 The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Thinking about the Poem

I. 1. What kind of place is Innisfree? Think about:

(āχāύিāĻ›āĻĢ্ā§°ী āĻ•েāύে āϧ⧰āĻŖā§° āĻ াāχ? āϚিāύ্āϤা āϕ⧰āĻ•)

Ans-  Innisfree is a natural place which full of beauty and peace.

(i) the three things the poet wants to do when he goes back there (stanza I):

(āĻ•āĻŦিāϝ়ে āϤাāϞৈ āωāĻāϤি āĻ—'āϞে āϤিāύিāϟা āĻ•াāĻŽ āϕ⧰িāĻŦ āĻŦিāϚাā§°ে (āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ• ā§§)

Ans- Three things the poet wants to do when he goes back there are:

  • He wants to build a small cabin of clay and wattles.
  • He wants to plant nine rows of beans.
  • He wants to have a hive of honey bees.

(ii) what he hears and sees there and its effect on him (stanza II):

(āϤেāĻ“ঁ āϤাāϤ āĻ•ি āĻļুāύিāĻ›ে āφ⧰ু āĻĻেāĻ–িāĻ›ে āφ⧰ু āϤেāĻ“ঁā§° āĻ“āĻĒā§°āϤ āχāϝ়াā§° āĻĒ্ā§°āĻাā§ą (āĻĻ্āĻŦিāϤীāϝ় āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ•)

Ans- The poet hears the cricket's song. He sees midnight shine and a purple glow at noon. Evenings are full of linnet wings. All this makes him feel joyous and gives him peace of mind.

(iii) what he hears in his "heart's core" even when he is far away from Innisfree (stanza III).

(āχāύিāĻ›āĻĢ্ā§°ীā§° āĻĒā§°া āĻŦāĻšু āĻĻূā§°āϤ āĻĨাāĻ•িāϞেāĻ“ āϤেāĻ“ঁ āϤেāĻ“ঁā§° "āĻšৃāĻĻāϝ়ā§° āĻ•েāύ্āĻĻ্ā§°āϤ" āϝি āĻļুāύিāĻ›ে (āϤৃāϤীāϝ় āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ•)

Ans- When the poet is far away from Innisfree he hears the sound of the lake water washing the shore in his “heart's core”.

2. By now you may have concluded that Innisfree is a simple, natural place, full of beauty and peace. How does the poet contrast it with where he now stands? (Read stanza III.)

(āĻāϤিāϝ়াāϞৈāĻ•ে āφāĻĒুāύি āĻšāϝ়āϤো āĻāχ āϏিāĻĻ্āϧাāύ্āϤāϤ āωāĻĒāύীāϤ āĻšৈāĻ›ে āϝে āχāύিāĻ›āĻĢ্ā§°ী āĻšৈāĻ›ে āĻāĻ• āϏ⧰āϞ, āĻĒ্ā§°াāĻ•ৃāϤিāĻ• āϏ্āĻĨাāύ, āϝি āϏৌāύ্āĻĻā§°্āϝ āφ⧰ু āĻļাāύ্āϤিā§°ে āĻĒā§°িāĻĒূā§°্āĻŖ। āĻ•āĻŦিāϜāύে āĻāϤিāϝ়া āϝ'āϤ āĻĨিāϝ় āĻšৈ āφāĻ›ে āϤাā§° āϏৈāϤে āχāϝ়াāĻ• āĻ•েāύেāĻ•ৈ āĻŦিāĻĒā§°ীāϤ āϕ⧰ে? (āϤৃāϤীāϝ় āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ• āĻĒāĻĸ়āĻ•।)

Ans- The natural beauty of Innisfree is explained in contrast with dull city life and grey pavements. The color grey symbolizes death and decay. He contrasted morning, noon, evening, night, and natural beauty of Innisfree with sky touching buildings of city which do not provide peace of mind at all.

3. Do you think Innisfree is only a place, or a state of mind? Does the poet actually miss the place of his boyhood days?

 (āφāĻĒুāύি āĻাāĻŦেāύে āϝে āχāύিāĻ›āĻĢ্ā§°ী āĻ•েā§ąāϞ āĻāϟা āĻ াāχ, āĻŦা āĻŽাāύāϏিāĻ• āϏ্āĻĨিāϤি? āĻ•āĻŦিāϝ়ে āĻĒ্ā§°āĻ•ৃāϤāϤে āϤেāĻ“ঁā§° āĻŦাāϞ্āϝāĻ•াāϞ⧰ āĻĻিāύāĻŦোā§°ā§° āĻ াāχāĻ–িāύি āĻšেā§°ুā§ąাāϝ় āύেāĻ•ি)

Ans- Innisfree is representative of what the poet considers an ideal place to live, which is devoid of the restless humdrum of his life. Yes, the poet actually misses the place of his boyhood days. Even when he is away from Innisfree, he recalls the sound of the lake water washing the shore.

II. 1. Look at the words the poet uses to describe what he sees and hears at Innisfree

 (āĻ•āĻŦিāϝ়ে āχāύিāĻ›āĻĢ্ā§°ীāϤ āĻ•ি āĻĻেāĻ–ে āφ⧰ু āĻļুāύিāĻ›ে āϤাāĻ• āĻŦā§°্āĻŖāύা āϕ⧰িāĻŦāϞৈ āĻŦ্āĻ¯ā§ąāĻšাā§° āϕ⧰া āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§° āϚাāĻ“āĻ•)

Ans-

(i) bee-loud glade

 (āĻŽৌāĻŽাāĻ–ি-āĻĄাāϙ⧰ āĻ—্āϞেāĻĄ)

Ans: Bee loud glade refers to the buzzing of bees in an open space. This term has been taken from the W.B Yeats's The Lake of Innisfree.

(ii) evenings full of the linnet's wings

 (āϞিāύেāϟ⧰ āĻĒাāĻ–িā§°ে āĻā§°্āϤি āϏāύ্āϧিāϝ়া)

Ans: The phrase 'evening full of the linnet's wing' refers to the sky filled with the fluttering and flying linnets (a type of bird). The poet describes how the course of the day goes by and describes how the evening in Innisfree looks like.

(iii) lake water lapping with low sounds

(āĻ•āĻŽ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻā§° āϏৈāϤে āĻš্ā§°āĻĻā§° āĻĒাāύী āϞেāĻĒিং)

Ans: In the last stanza, after detailed thinking about his escape, the speaker comes back to his reality. Thereafter, he says that, even when in the midst of the city's noise, he will always be able to hear his dream and the soft sound of the lake waves "lapping" on isle of Innisfree's shore.

What pictures do these words create in your mind?

(āĻāχ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§°ে āφāĻĒোāύাā§° āĻŽāύāϤ āĻ•ি āĻ›āĻŦি āϏৃāώ্āϟি āϕ⧰ে)

Ans-

2. Look at these words;

 (āĻāχ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§° āϚাāĻ“āĻ•)

... peace comes dropping slow

 (āĻļাāύ্āϤি āϧীā§°ে āϧীā§°ে āύাāĻŽি āφāĻšে)

Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings

(ā§°াāϤিāĻĒুā§ąাā§° āĻ†ā§ąā§°āĻŖā§° āĻĒā§°া āĻ•্ā§°িāĻ•েāϟāĻ—াāχ āĻĨāĻ•া āĻ াāχāϞৈ āύাāĻŽি āϝোā§ąা)

What do these words mean to you? What do you think "comes dropping slow...from the veils of the morning"? What does "to where the cricket sings" mean?

(āĻāχ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§°ে āφāĻĒোāύাā§° āĻŦাāĻŦে āĻ•ি āĻŦুāϜাāϝ়? āφāĻĒুāύি āĻ•ি āĻাāĻŦে "āϞাāĻšে āϞাāĻšে āύাāĻŽি āφāĻšে... ā§°াāϤিāĻĒুā§ąাā§° āĻ†ā§ąā§°āĻŖā§° āĻĒā§°া"? "āĻ•্ā§°িāĻ•েāϟāĻ• āĻ•'āϤ āĻ—াāϝ়" āϤাā§° āĻ…ā§°্āĻĨ āĻ•ি)
