Chapter - 4
The Lake Isle of Innisfree
Thinking about the Poem
I. 1. What kind of place is Innisfree? Think about:
(āĻāύিāĻāĻĢ্ā§°ী āĻেāύে āϧ⧰āĻŖā§° āĻ াāĻ? āĻিāύ্āϤা āĻā§°āĻ)
Ans- Innisfree is a natural place which full of beauty and peace.
(i) the three things the poet wants to do when he goes back there (stanza I):
(āĻāĻŦিāϝ়ে āϤাāϞৈ āĻāĻāϤি āĻ'āϞে āϤিāύিāĻা āĻাāĻŽ āĻā§°িāĻŦ āĻŦিāĻাā§°ে (āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ ā§§)
Ans- Three things the poet wants to do when he goes back there are:
- He wants to build a small cabin of clay and wattles.
- He wants to plant nine rows of beans.
- He wants to have a hive of honey bees.
(ii) what he hears and sees there and its effect on him (stanza II):
(āϤেāĻঁ āϤাāϤ āĻি āĻļুāύিāĻে āĻā§°ু āĻĻেāĻিāĻে āĻā§°ু āϤেāĻঁā§° āĻāĻĒā§°āϤ āĻāϝ়াā§° āĻĒ্ā§°āĻাā§ą (āĻĻ্āĻŦিāϤীāϝ় āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ)
Ans- The poet hears the cricket's song. He sees midnight shine and a purple glow at noon. Evenings are full of linnet wings. All this makes him feel joyous and gives him peace of mind.
(iii) what he hears in his "heart's core" even when he is far away from Innisfree (stanza III).
(āĻāύিāĻāĻĢ্ā§°ীā§° āĻĒā§°া āĻŦāĻšু āĻĻূā§°āϤ āĻĨাāĻিāϞেāĻ āϤেāĻঁ āϤেāĻঁā§° "āĻšৃāĻĻāϝ়ā§° āĻেāύ্āĻĻ্ā§°āϤ" āϝি āĻļুāύিāĻে (āϤৃāϤীāϝ় āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ)
Ans- When the poet is far away from Innisfree he hears the sound of the lake water washing the shore in his “heart's core”.
2. By now you may have concluded that Innisfree is a simple, natural place, full of beauty and peace. How does the poet contrast it with where he now stands? (Read stanza III.)
(āĻāϤিāϝ়াāϞৈāĻে āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻšāϝ়āϤো āĻāĻ āϏিāĻĻ্āϧাāύ্āϤāϤ āĻāĻĒāύীāϤ āĻšৈāĻে āϝে āĻāύিāĻāĻĢ্ā§°ী āĻšৈāĻে āĻāĻ āϏ⧰āϞ, āĻĒ্ā§°াāĻৃāϤিāĻ āϏ্āĻĨাāύ, āϝি āϏৌāύ্āĻĻā§°্āϝ āĻā§°ু āĻļাāύ্āϤিā§°ে āĻĒā§°িāĻĒূā§°্āĻŖ। āĻāĻŦিāĻāύে āĻāϤিāϝ়া āϝ'āϤ āĻĨিāϝ় āĻšৈ āĻāĻে āϤাā§° āϏৈāϤে āĻāϝ়াāĻ āĻেāύেāĻৈ āĻŦিāĻĒā§°ীāϤ āĻā§°ে? (āϤৃāϤীāϝ় āϏ্āĻ¤ā§ąāĻ āĻĒāĻĸ়āĻ।)
Ans- The natural beauty of Innisfree is explained in contrast with dull city life and grey pavements. The color grey symbolizes death and decay. He contrasted morning, noon, evening, night, and natural beauty of Innisfree with sky touching buildings of city which do not provide peace of mind at all.
3. Do you think Innisfree is only a place, or a state of mind? Does the poet actually miss the place of his boyhood days?
(āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻাāĻŦেāύে āϝে āĻāύিāĻāĻĢ্ā§°ী āĻেā§ąāϞ āĻāĻা āĻ াāĻ, āĻŦা āĻŽাāύāϏিāĻ āϏ্āĻĨিāϤি? āĻāĻŦিāϝ়ে āĻĒ্ā§°āĻৃāϤāϤে āϤেāĻঁā§° āĻŦাāϞ্āϝāĻাāϞ⧰ āĻĻিāύāĻŦোā§°ā§° āĻ াāĻāĻিāύি āĻšেā§°ুā§ąাāϝ় āύেāĻি)
Ans- Innisfree is representative of what the poet considers an ideal place to live, which is devoid of the restless humdrum of his life. Yes, the poet actually misses the place of his boyhood days. Even when he is away from Innisfree, he recalls the sound of the lake water washing the shore.
II. 1. Look at the words the poet uses to describe what he sees and hears at Innisfree
(āĻāĻŦিāϝ়ে āĻāύিāĻāĻĢ্ā§°ীāϤ āĻি āĻĻেāĻে āĻā§°ু āĻļুāύিāĻে āϤাāĻ āĻŦā§°্āĻŖāύা āĻā§°িāĻŦāϞৈ āĻŦ্āĻ¯ā§ąāĻšাā§° āĻā§°া āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§° āĻাāĻāĻ)
Ans-
(i) bee-loud glade
(āĻŽৌāĻŽাāĻি-āĻĄাāĻā§° āĻ্āϞেāĻĄ)
Ans: Bee loud glade refers to the buzzing of bees in an open space. This term has been taken from the W.B Yeats's The Lake of Innisfree.
(ii) evenings full of the linnet's wings
(āϞিāύেāĻā§° āĻĒাāĻিā§°ে āĻā§°্āϤি āϏāύ্āϧিāϝ়া)
Ans: The phrase 'evening full of the linnet's wing' refers to the sky filled with the fluttering and flying linnets (a type of bird). The poet describes how the course of the day goes by and describes how the evening in Innisfree looks like.
(iii) lake water lapping with low sounds
(āĻāĻŽ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻā§° āϏৈāϤে āĻš্ā§°āĻĻā§° āĻĒাāύী āϞেāĻĒিং)
Ans: In the last stanza, after detailed thinking about his escape, the speaker comes back to his reality. Thereafter, he says that, even when in the midst of the city's noise, he will always be able to hear his dream and the soft sound of the lake waves "lapping" on isle of Innisfree's shore.
What pictures do these words create in your mind?
(āĻāĻ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§°ে āĻāĻĒোāύাā§° āĻŽāύāϤ āĻি āĻāĻŦি āϏৃāώ্āĻি āĻā§°ে)
Ans-
2. Look at these words;
(āĻāĻ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§° āĻাāĻāĻ)
... peace comes dropping slow
(āĻļাāύ্āϤি āϧীā§°ে āϧীā§°ে āύাāĻŽি āĻāĻšে)
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings
(ā§°াāϤিāĻĒুā§ąাā§° āĻā§ąā§°āĻŖā§° āĻĒā§°া āĻ্ā§°িāĻেāĻāĻাāĻ āĻĨāĻা āĻ াāĻāϞৈ āύাāĻŽি āϝোā§ąা)
What do these words mean to you? What do you think "comes dropping slow...from the veils of the morning"? What does "to where the cricket sings" mean?
(āĻāĻ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāĻŦোā§°ে āĻāĻĒোāύাā§° āĻŦাāĻŦে āĻি āĻŦুāĻাāϝ়? āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻি āĻাāĻŦে "āϞাāĻšে āϞাāĻšে āύাāĻŽি āĻāĻšে... ā§°াāϤিāĻĒুā§ąাā§° āĻā§ąā§°āĻŖā§° āĻĒā§°া"? "āĻ্ā§°িāĻেāĻāĻ āĻ'āϤ āĻাāϝ়" āϤাā§° āĻ ā§°্āĻĨ āĻি)
