The Living Organisms and Their Surroundings

Chapter 9

Exercises (অনুশীলনী)

1.    What is a habitat?

Ans:- The environment in which plants or organisms live is called their habitat.

2.    How are cactus adapted to survive in a desert?

Ans:- Plants in the desert do not have leaves and are very small and in the form of thorns. It also helps in reducing the amount of water released from the leaves through the presentation.

The leaf-like shapes seen in the case of ketocaus are actually part of the stem of the plant. It is by this that the cactus processes photosynthesis. Cover the stem part with a thick waxy coat, which helps in retaining water. Like other plants in the desert, the roots of the cactus also go far below the ground to absorb water.

3.    Fill in the blanks

(a)   The presence of specific features, which enable a plant or an animal to live in a par-ticular                        habitat, is called -----------------

Ans:- Adaptation.

(b)    The habitats of the plants and animals that live on land are called habitat.

Ans: Terrestrials.

(c)    The habitats of plants and animals that live in water are called ----------------- habitat.

Ans:- Aquatic.

(d)    Soil, water and air are the factors of a habitat.

Ans:- Inorganic.

(e)    Changes in our surroundings that make us respond to them, are called -------------------.

Ans:- Stimulus.

4.    Which of the things in the following list are nonliving?

Plough, Muslnoom, Sewingmachine, Radio, Boot, Water hyacinth, Earthworm

Ans:- Plough, Sewingmachine, Radio, and Boot.

5.    Give an example of anon-living thing, which shows any two characteristics offivingthings.

Ans:- The two characteristics of an organism are-

1. The organism needs food.

2) The living being acts of respiration and rationing.

It is an inert substance - soil.

6.    Which of the non-living things listed below-, were onceuirtof a living thing?

Ans:- Butter, leather, wool, cooking oils, apples and rubber.

7.    List the common characteristics of the things.

Ans:-

8.    Explain, why speed is important for survival in the grasslands for animals that live there. (Hint I           here are few trees or places for animals to hide in grasslands habitats.)

Ans:-  Grasslands are home to animals that survive by eating grass such as deer, zebras, etc. But the various carnivorous animals that feed on these herbivores also live in these areas. Herbivores have a camouflage in their bodies to protect themselves from falling prey to carnivorous animals, but sometimes that too is not enough. So there is no other way but to speed up the rapid movement of herbivores to avoid carnivorous animals. In the same way, carnivorous animals also have to run very fast on their own to fall prey to herbivores.
