This story is about Rip Van Winkle, a good-natured but lazy man, who goes away into the hills and falls asleep. When he awakens twenty years later, Rip finds that quite a few things have changed!

यह कहानी अच्छे स्वभाव वाले रिप वान विंकल के बारे में है लेकिन आलसी आदमी, जो पहाड़ों में चला जाता है और सो गये। जब वह बीस साल बाद जागता है, रिप को लगता है कि काफ़ी चीज़ें बदल गई हैं!

Many years ago, at the foothills of the Kaatskill (Kat-skill) mountains, was a little village. In the village lived a, good-natured fellow named Rip Van Winkle. He was a kind neighbour, ready to help anyone. Everyone in the village liked him. The children of the village shouted with joy whenever they saw him because he played with them, he taught them to fly kites and shoot marbles, and told them long stories.

कई साल पहले, कैटस्किल (कैट-कौशल) की तलहटी में पहाड़, एक छोटा सा गाँव था। गाँव में एक रहता था रिप वान विंकल नामक सरल, अच्छे स्वभाव वाले व्यक्ति। वह वह एक दयालु पड़ोसी था, किसी की भी मदद करने को तैयार था। हर कोई अंदर गांव को वह पसंद आया. गाँव के बच्चे चिल्लाये जब भी वे उसे देखते थे तो बहुत प्रसन्न होते थे, क्योंकि वह उसके साथ खेलता था उन्होंने उन्हें पतंग उड़ाना और कंचे मारना सिखाया, और उन्हें लम्बी-लम्बी कहानियाँ सुनायीं।

The only problem with Rip was that he was very lazy. He did no work on his own farm and just idled away his time. His fences were falling to pieces. His cow was going astray. Weeds grew on his farm. Rip's constant companion was his dog, named Wolf. To avoid work, he would walk away into the forest with his dog.

 रिप के साथ एकमात्र समस्या यह थी कि वह बहुत आलसी था। उसने अपने खेत पर कोई काम नहीं किया और अपने खेत को यूं ही बेकार कर दिया समय। उसकी बाड़ें टुकड़े-टुकड़े हो रही थीं। उसकी गाय जा रही थी पथभ्रष्ट. उसके खेत में घास-फूस उग आया। रिप स्थिरांक साथी उसका कुत्ता था, जिसका नाम वुल्फ था। काम से बचने के लिए वह अपने कुत्ते के साथ जंगल में चला जाएगा।  

One day, Rip just walked on and on and reached the highest part of the mountains. It was late in the afternoon when he reached there. Tired after his long climb, he lay down and began daydreaming. It was soon evening and he realised it would be night by the time he reached his village.

एक दिन, रिप बस चलता रहा और पहुंच गया पर्वतों का सबसे ऊँचा भाग. काफी देर हो चुकी थी दोपहर जब वह वहां पहुंचा। उसके लंबे समय के बाद थक गया चढ़ो, वह लेट गया और दिवास्वप्न देखने लगा। यह जल्द ही था शाम हो गई और उसे एहसास हुआ कि उस समय तक रात हो चुकी होगी अपने गांव पहुंच गया.

Suddenly, he heard a voice calling out, “Rip Van Winkle, Rip Van Winkle!” He looked around and saw a short, old man, with thick hair and a grizzled beard walking towards him with a barrel. He made signs to help him carry the barrel. Rip hurried to help the stranger who caught his hand tightly. Together they reached a place where there were some more odd looking men, playing ninepins. They were all dressed the same way and all of them had beards of various shapes and colours. Even though they were playing a game, their faces were serious and there was silence! The only sound was the noise of the balls, which echoed in the mountains like thunder.

अचानक, उसने एक आवाज सुनी, "रिप वान विंकल, रिप वान विंकल!" उसने चारों ओर देखा और देखा कि एक छोटा, बूढ़ा आदमी, जिसके घने बाल थे और उसकी दाढ़ी बढ़ी हुई थी, वह एक बैरल के साथ उसकी ओर आ रहा था। उसने बैरल ले जाने में मदद के लिए संकेत दिये। रिप ने उस अजनबी की मदद करने के लिए जल्दबाजी की जिसने उसका हाथ कसकर पकड़ लिया। वे एक साथ एक ऐसी जगह पहुँचे जहाँ कुछ और अजीब दिखने वाले आदमी थे, जो नाइनपिन बजा रहे थे। वे सभी एक ही तरह के कपड़े पहने हुए थे और उन सभी की अलग-अलग आकार और रंगों की दाढ़ी थी। हालाँकि वे खेल खेल रहे थे, फिर भी उनके चेहरे गंभीर थे और सन्नाटा था! एकमात्र ध्वनि गेंदों का शोर थी, जो गड़गड़ाहट की तरह पहाड़ों में गूँजती थी।

As Rip and his companion reached them, they stopped playing and stared at Rip with a fixed gaze. Rip was really frightened. His companion emptied the contents of the barrel into glasses and made Rip drink it. Rip obeyed as he was trembling with fear. Since he was thirsty he drank a few more glasses and slowly fell into a deep sleep.

जैसे ही रिप और उसका साथी उनके पास पहुंचे, उन्होंने खेलना बंद कर दिया और रिप को एकटक देखने लगा। फाड़ना सचमुच डरा हुआ था. उसके साथी ने खाली कर दिया बैरल की सामग्री को गिलासों में डाला और रिप को इसे पिलाया। रिप ने आज्ञा का पालन किया क्योंकि वह डर से कांप रहा था। चूंकि वह था प्यास लगने पर उसने कुछ और गिलास पी लिए और धीरे-धीरे पानी में गिर गया गहन निद्रा।

On waking up, he found that he was at the place where he had first met the old man. He rubbed his eyes — it was a bright sunny morning. “Surely, I have not slept here all night,” thought Rip. 

जागने पर उसने पाया कि वह उसी स्थान पर है जहां उनकी पहली बार बुजुर्ग से मुलाकात हुई थी। उसने अपनी आँखें मलीं - यह एक चमकदार धूप वाली सुबह थी। “निश्चित रूप से, मैं सोया नहीं हूँ पूरी रात यहीं,'' रिप ने

He looked around for Wolf, but he was nowhere. Rip whistled for him. “Wolf! Wolf!” he then shouted. No dog was to be seen. “Where has this dog gone?” he muttered to himself. He began to descend the mountain to go back to his village.

 उसने चारों ओर वुल्फ की तलाश की, लेकिन वह कहीं नहीं था। फाड़ना उसके लिए सीटी बजाई. "भेड़िया  भेड़िया!" वह फिर चिल्लाया. कोई कुत्ता नहींदेखना था. “यह कुत्ता कहाँ चला गया?” वह बड़बड़ाया स्वयं को। वह वापस जाने के लिए पहाड़ से नीचे उतरने लगा उसके गांव के लिए.

As he neared the village, he met a number of people but he didn't know any of them. The villagers also stared at him equally surprised. “Who is this man?” said one. 

जैसे ही वह गांव के पास पहुंचा, उसकी मुलाकात कई लोगों से हुई परन्तु वह उनमें से किसी को भी नहीं जानता था। गांव वाले भी घूरते रहे उस पर भी उतना ही आश्चर्य हुआ। "यह आदमी कौन हे?" एक ने कहा.

“I've never seen him before,” said another, “look at his long white beard and his wrinkled face.”

यह सुनकर रिप ने अपनी ठुड्डी पर हाथ फेरा आश्चर्य से, उसने पाया कि उसकी दाढ़ी एक फुट लंबी हो गई थी, और यह सब सफेद था!

On hearing this, Rip stroked his chin and, to his astonishment, he found his beard had grown a foot long, and it was all white!

यह सुनकर, रिप ने अपनी ठुड्डी पर हाथ फेरा और उसे आश्चर्य हुआ, उसने पाया कि उसकी दाढ़ी एक फुट लंबी हो गई थी, और वह पूरी तरह से सफेद थी!

An old woman walked up to him and looked at his face for a moment. Then she exclaimed — “It is Rip Van Winkle! Welcome home again, old neighbour! Where have you been these twenty long years?
