Unit 10
The Reproductive System
Question: Define the reproductive system. Describe the structure and functions of the female reproductive system.
Answer:
Reproductive System
The reproductive system is a group of organs that are involved in reproduction and the production of sex cells or gametes. It helps in the continuation of human life by producing offspring. The reproductive system also produces hormones that control sexual development and reproductive functions.
Female Reproductive System
The female reproductive system consists of organs that help in the production of ova (eggs), fertilization, development of the embryo, and childbirth.
The main parts of the female reproductive system are the ovaries, fallopian tubes, uterus, and vagina.
Structure of Female Reproductive System
1. Ovaries : The female reproductive system contains a pair of ovaries. They are located on either side of the uterus. Ovaries produce and store ova or eggs. They also secrete female sex hormones called estrogen and progesterone.
2. Fallopian Tubes (Oviducts) : The fallopian tubes are thin muscular tubes that connect the ovaries to the uterus. They carry the ovum from the ovary to the uterus. Fertilization usually takes place in the fallopian tubes.
3. Uterus : The uterus is a hollow, pear-shaped muscular organ located in the pelvic cavity. It is the site where the fertilized egg develops into an embryo and fetus. The uterus protects and nourishes the developing baby during pregnancy.
4. Vagina : The vagina is a muscular canal that connects the cervix of the uterus to the external genital organs. It acts as the passage for menstrual flow, sexual intercourse, and childbirth.
Functions of Female Reproductive System
1. Production of Female Gametes : The ovaries produce female gametes called ova or eggs.
2. Secretion of Hormones : The ovaries secrete hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, which regulate the menstrual cycle and female secondary sexual characteristics.
3. Fertilization : The fallopian tubes provide the site for fertilization of the ovum by sperm.
4. Development of Embryo : The uterus provides nourishment and protection for the developing embryo and fetus during pregnancy.
5. Childbirth : The vagina acts as the birth canal during delivery of the baby.
