Ans-
  • Tommy is comparing the television screen (his source of books) with physical books of the past. He finds the idea of throwing away a book after reading it wasteful compared to his constantly updated electronic library.

2. "Sure they had a teacher, but it wasn't a regular teacher. It was a man.

("āύিāĻļ্āϚিāϤāĻাā§ąে āϤেāĻ“ঁāϞোāϕ⧰ āĻāϜāύ āĻļিāĻ•্āώāĻ• āφāĻ›িāϞ, āĻ•িāύ্āϤু āχ āύিāϝ়āĻŽীāϝ়া āĻļিāĻ•্āώāĻ• āύাāĻ›িāϞ। āĻāϜāύ āĻŽাāύুāĻš āφāĻ›িāϞ)

III. Answer each of these questions in a short paragraph (about 30 words).

(āĻāχ āĻĒ্ā§°āϤিāϟো āĻĒ্ā§°āĻļ্āύ⧰ āωāϤ্āϤ⧰ āĻāϟা āϚāĻŽু āĻ…āύুāϚ্āĻ›েāĻĻāϤ (āĻĒ্ā§°াāϝ় 30 āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻ)

1. What kind of teachers did Margie and Tommy have?

(āĻŽাā§°্āĻ—ি āφ⧰ু āϟāĻŽীā§° āĻ•েāύে āϧ⧰āĻŖā§° āĻļিāĻ•্āώāĻ• āφāĻ›িāϞ)

Ans-  Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers. The mechanical teachers had big screens on which all the lessons were shown and questions were asked. The children were taught through computer and television screens. They did not have humans as teachers.

2. Why did Margie's mother send for the County Inspector?

(āĻŽাā§°্āĻ—িā§° āĻŽাāĻ•ে āĻ•াāωāĻŖ্āϟি āχāύ্āϏāĻĒেāĻ•্āϟ⧰āϞৈ āĻ•িāϝ় āĻĒāĻ িāϝ়াāχāĻ›িāϞ)

Ans- Margie's mother sent for the County Inspector because the mechanical teacher was not functioning efficiently. It had been giving her test after test in geography and she had been doing worse and worse. The county inspector gave Margie an apple and started checking for the fault in the mechanical teacher.

3. What did he do?

(āϤেāĻ“ঁ āĻ•ি āϕ⧰িāĻ›িāϞ)

Ans- When the County Inspector visited, he gave Margie an apple and started examining the mechanical teacher

4. Why was Margie doing badly in geography? What did the County Inspect do to help her?

(āĻŽাā§°্āϜিāϝ়ে āĻূāĻ—োāϞāϤ āĻ•িāϝ় āĻŦেāϝ়া āϕ⧰ি āφāĻ›িāϞ? āĻ•াāωāĻŖ্āϟি āχāύāĻেāώ্āϟ⧰েāϤাāχ āϤাāχāĻ• āϏāĻšাāϝ় āϕ⧰িāĻŦāϞৈ āĻ•ি āϕ⧰িāĻ›িāϞ)

Ans- Margie was doing badly in geography because the geography sector of the mechanical teacher had been adjusted at a higher level. In order to help her, the County Inspector slowed down this sector to an average ten-year level

5. What had once happened to Tommy's teacher?

(āĻāϏāĻŽāϝ়āϤ āϟāĻŽিā§° āĻļিāĻ•্āώāϕ⧰ āĻ•ি āĻšৈāĻ›িāϞ)

Ans- Once, Tommy's teacher was taken away for nearly a month because its history sector had blanked out completely.

6. Did Margie have regular days and hours for school? If so, why?

(āĻŽাā§°্āϜিā§° āĻŦিāĻĻ্āϝাāϞāϝ়ā§° āĻŦাāĻŦে āύিāϝ়āĻŽীāϝ়া āĻĻিāύ āφ⧰ু āϘāĻŖ্āϟা āφāĻ›িāϞ āύেāĻ•ি? āϝāĻĻি āĻšāϝ়, āĻ•িāϝ়)

Ans- Yes, Margie had regular days and hours for school. The mechanical teacher always turned on at the same time every day except Saturdays and Sundays. This was because her mother believed that learning at regular hours helped little girls learn better.

7. How does Tommy describe the old kind of school?

 (āϟāĻŽীāϝ়ে āĻĒুā§°āĻŖি āϧ⧰āĻŖā§° āĻŦিāĻĻ্āϝাāϞāϝ়ā§° āĻŦā§°্āĻŖāύা āĻ•েāύেāĻĻā§°ে āϕ⧰ে)

Ans- Tommy describes the old kind of school as a special building where all kids studied together. There hundreds of students were studying and playing together. They used to shout and laugh together in an open yard. They had a teacher who wasn't a regular teacher but was a man.

8. How does he describe the old kind of teachers?

(āϤেāĻ“ঁ āĻĒুā§°āĻŖি āϧ⧰āĻŖā§° āĻļিāĻ•্āώāĻ•āϏāĻ•āϞāĻ• āĻ•েāύেāĻĻā§°ে āĻŦā§°্āĻŖāύা āϕ⧰ে)

Ans- Tommy describes the old kind of teachers as living human beings who did not live in the house. Instead, they taught the students in a special building. They taught the children in groups and gave them homework. Note: Margie and Tommy had mechanical teachers.

IV. Answer each of these questions in two or three paragraphs (100-150 words).

(āĻāχ āĻĒ্ā§°āĻļ্āύāĻŦোā§°ā§° āĻĒ্ā§°āϤিāϟোā§° āĻĻুāϟা āĻŦা āϤিāύিāϟা āĻ…āύুāϚ্āĻ›েāĻĻāϤ āωāϤ্āϤ⧰ āĻĻিāϝ়āĻ• (100-150 āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻ)

 1. What are the main features of the mechanical teachers and the schoolrooms that Margie and Tommy have in the story?

(āĻ•াāĻšিāύীāϟোāϤ āĻŽাā§°্āĻ—ি āφ⧰ু āϟāĻŽীā§° āϝাāύ্āϤ্ā§°িāĻ• āĻļিāĻ•্āώāĻ• āφ⧰ু āϏ্āĻ•ুāϞ⧰ āĻ•োāĻ াāĻŦোā§°ā§° āĻŽুāĻ–্āϝ āĻŦৈāĻļিāώ্āϟ্āϝāĻŦোā§° āĻ•ি)
Ans- Margie and Tommy were taught by mechanics. They had wide black screens that displayed all of the lessons and allowed students to ask questions. These teachers were chosen based on the age and ability of the student in question. They had a slot for students to put their homework and test papers.

2. Why did Margie hate school? Why did she think the old kind of school must have been fun?

(āĻŽাā§°্āϜিāϝ়ে āϏ্āĻ•ুāϞāĻ• āĻ•িāϝ় āϘৃāĻŖা āϕ⧰িāĻ›িāϞ? āϤাāχ āĻ•িāϝ় āĻাāĻŦিāĻ›িāϞ āϝে āĻĒুā§°āĻŖি āϧ⧰āĻŖā§° āĻŦিāĻĻ্āϝাāϞāϝ়āĻ–āύ āύিāĻļ্āϚāϝ় āφāύāύ্āĻĻāĻĻাāϝ়āĻ• āφāĻ›িāϞ)

Ans- Margie and Tommy were taught by mechanics. They had wide black screens that displayed all of the lessons and allowed students to ask questions. These teachers were chosen based on the age and ability of the student in question. They had a slot for students to put their homework and test papers.

3. Do you agree with Margie that schools today are more fun than the school in the story? Give reasons for your answer.

(āφāĻĒুāύি āĻŽাā§°্āϜিā§° āϏৈāϤে āĻāĻ•āĻŽāϤ āύেāĻ•ি āϝে āφāϜিā§° āĻŦিāĻĻ্āϝাāϞāϝ়āĻŦোā§° āĻ•াāĻšিāύীāϟোā§° āĻŦিāĻĻ্āϝাāϞāϝ়āϤāĻ•ৈ āĻŦেāĻ›ি āφāύāύ্āĻĻāĻĻাāϝ়āĻ•? āφāĻĒোāύাā§° āωāϤ্āϤ⧰⧰ āĻ•াā§°āĻŖ āĻĻিāϝ়āĻ•)

Ans- Yes I agree that schools today are more fun than the school in the story. In the story there is no interaction among students regarding studies. Studying and answering questions seems to be a boring idea. Doing homework without anybody's help and writing them in a punch code would also be a tedious job.

Thinking about Language

I. Adverbs

Read this sentence taken from the story:

(āĻ•াāĻšিāύীāϟোā§° āĻĒā§°া āϞোā§ąা āĻāχ āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝāϟো āĻĒāĻĸ়āĻ•)

They had once taken Tommy's teacher away for nearly a month because the history sector had blanked out completely.

(āϤেāĻ“ঁāϞোāĻ•ে āĻāĻŦাā§° āϟāĻŽিā§° āĻļিāĻ•্āώāĻ•āĻ• āĻĒ্ā§°াāϝ় āĻāĻŽাāĻšā§° āĻŦাāĻŦে āϞৈ āĻ—ৈāĻ›িāϞ āĻ•াā§°āĻŖ āχāϤিāĻšাāϏ āĻ–āĻŖ্āĻĄāϟো āϏāĻŽ্āĻĒূā§°্āĻŖā§°ূāĻĒে āĻ–াāϞী āĻšৈ āĻ—ৈāĻ›িāϞ)

The word complete is an adjective. When you add -ly to it, it becomes an adverb.

(āϏāĻŽ্āĻĒূā§°্āĻŖ āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻāϟো āĻāϟা āĻŦিāĻļেāώāĻŖ। āϝেāϤিāϝ়া āφāĻĒুāύি āχāϝ়াāϤ āϝোāĻ— āϕ⧰ে, āχ āĻāϟা āĻ•্ā§°িāϝ়াāĻŦিāĻļেāώāĻŖ āĻšৈ āĻĒā§°ে)

1. Find the sentences in the lesson which have the adverbs given in the box below.

(āϤāϞ⧰ āĻŦাāĻ•āϚāϟোāϤ āĻĻিāϝ়া āĻ•্ā§°িāϝ়াāĻŦিāĻļেāώāĻŖāĻĨāĻ•া āĻĒাāĻ āϤ āĻĨāĻ•া āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝāĻŦোā§° āĻŦিāϚাā§°āĻ•)

2. Now use these adverbs to fill in the blanks in the sentences below.

II. If Not and Unless

● Imagine that Margie's mother told her, "you'll feel awful if you don't finish your history lesson."

(āĻ•āϞ্āĻĒāύা āϕ⧰āĻ• āϝে āĻŽাā§°্āĻ—িā§° āĻŽাāĻ•ে āϤাāχāĻ• āĻ•ৈāĻ›িāϞ, "āϝāĻĻি āφāĻĒুāύি āφāĻĒোāύাā§° āχāϤিāĻšাāϏ⧰ āĻĒাāĻ  āĻļেāώ āύāϕ⧰ে āϤেāύ্āϤে āφāĻĒুāύি āĻāϝ়ংāϕ⧰ āĻ…āύুāĻā§ą āϕ⧰িāĻŦ)

● She could also say: "you'll feel awful unless you finish your history lesson." Unless means if not. Sentences with unless or if not are negative conditional sentences.

(āϤাāχ āĻāχāĻĻā§°েāĻ“ āĻ•'āĻŦ āĻĒাā§°ে: "āφāĻĒুāύি āφāĻĒোāύাā§° āχāϤিāĻšাāϏ⧰ āĻĒাāĻ  āĻļেāώ āύāϕ⧰িāϞে āφāĻĒুāύি āĻāϝ়ংāϕ⧰ āĻ…āύুāĻā§ą āϕ⧰িāĻŦ।" āϝāĻĻি āύāĻšāϝ় āĻŦুāϜাāϝ়। āĻ‹āĻŖাāϤ্āĻŽāĻ• āϚ⧰্āϤāϏাāĻĒেāĻ•্āώ āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝ āύāĻš'āϞে āĻŦা āύāĻš'āϞে āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝ)

Notice that these sentences have two parts. The part that begins with if not or unless tells us the condition. This part has a verb in the present tense (look at the verbs don't funish, finish in the sentences above).

(āϞāĻ•্āώ্āϝ āϕ⧰āĻ• āϝে āĻāχ āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝāĻŦোā§°ā§° āĻĻুāϟা āĻ…ংāĻļ āφāĻ›ে। āϝি āĻ…ংāĻļāϟো āφāĻŽাāĻ• āĻ…ā§ąāϏ্āĻĨাāϟো āĻ•োā§ąা āύāĻšāϝ় āĻŦা āύāĻš'āϞে āφ⧰āĻŽ্āĻ āĻšāϝ়। āĻāχ āĻ…ংāĻļāϟোā§° āĻŦā§°্āϤāĻŽাāύ āĻ•াāϞāϤ āĻāϟা āĻ•্ā§°িāϝ়া āφāĻ›ে (āĻ•্ā§°িāϝ়াāĻŦোā§° āϚাāĻ“āĻ• āφāĻŽোāĻĻāϜāύāĻ• āύāĻšāϝ়, āĻ“āĻĒā§°ā§° āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝāĻŦোā§°āϤ āϏāĻŽাāĻĒ্āϤ āϕ⧰āĻ•)

The other part of the sentence tells us about a possible result. It tells us what sentence is in the future tense (you'll feel/ you will feel).

(āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝāϟোā§° āφāύāϟো āĻ…ংāĻļāχ āφāĻŽাāĻ• āĻāϟা āϏāĻŽ্āĻাā§ą্āϝ āĻĢāϞাāĻĢāϞ⧰ āĻŦিāώāϝ়ে āĻ•āϝ়। āχ āφāĻŽাāĻ• āĻ•āϝ় āϝে āĻā§ąিāώ্āϝāϤে āĻ•ি āĻŦাāĻ•্āϝ āφāĻ›ে (āφāĻĒুāύি āĻ…āύুāĻā§ą āϕ⧰িāĻŦ/ āφāĻĒুāύি āĻ…āύুāĻā§ą āϕ⧰িāĻŦ)

Notice these two tenses again in the following examples.

(āύিāĻŽ্āύāϞিāĻ–িāϤ āωāĻĻাāĻšā§°āĻŖāĻŦোā§°āϤ āĻāχ āĻĻুāϟা āϟেāύāĻ› āĻĒুāύ⧰ āϞāĻ•্āώ্āϝ āϕ⧰āĻ•)
