Chapter 3
Resource
Exercises
1. (a) Quinine is derived from which plant?
Answer: Cinchona.
(b) What is biological resource?
Answer: Living things are called living resources.
(c) How many National Parks are there in Assam?
Answer: 7 countries.
(d) How many wildlife sanctuaries are there in Assam?
Answer: 18 countries.
(e) What is a perishable resource?
Answer: All inorganic resources found in nature are called perishable resources.
2. (a) What is meant by resources?
Answer: Resources are all materials that can be produced and used naturally. Air, water, plants, soil and animals are all used to meet individual needs. They are our resources.
(b) How does Professor Zimmerman explain the formula for wealth?
Answer: Professor Zimmerman's formula for wealth is that wealth does not mean an object or substance, but if that substance or object has utility.
(c) Why is human resource given the highest place among all resources?
Answer: Human resources are given the highest position among all resources. The reason for this is:
Man-made resources are becoming more efficient and perfect than ever before due to the advancement of human intelligence . People imagined some products that could meet people's needs. However, with the successful application of science and technology, the things of imagination have become reality and available to all people. It is because of this knowledge, growth and mastery of application techniques that humans are given the highest position among all resources.
(d) What is the difference between natural and man-made resources?
Answer: Natural resources: Natural resources are materials that are derived from nature. On the other hand,
Man-made resources: The quality and usability of man-made resources depends on the development of human intelligence and the application of intelligence.
3. (a) Explain the ways in which resources can be divided.
Answer: Resources can be divided into terrestrial, aquatic, solar, plant, animal, aerial and human according to their origin. Similarly, resources are divided into two categories according to their availability and those two categories are perishable and renewable. Depending on the use, resources are divided into land, water, soil, minerals, animals, metallic, non-metallic, marine, and many other categories. There are two other categories: organic and inorganic.
(b) Explain the difference between biological and inorganic resources with examples.
Answer: Biological resources- Biological resources are plants, animals, and microorganisms. Biological resources have both producers and consumers. Producer refers to all green plants. Cattle, goats, deer are the primary consumers. Carnivores such as tigers, lions, foxes, etc. are secondary consumers.
Inorganic resources - Inorganic resources are those that have no life, no life or death, that do not eat or grow naturally. This type of resource is divided into two categories, material and chemical. Material resources such as water, soil, minerals, and fuel. Inorganic resources include carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, oxygen, hydrogen, and potassium.
(c) Explain who are the producers and consumers of biological resources.
Answer: The producers and consumers of biological resources are: Producers refer to all green plants. Consumers are divided into three categories: primary, secondary and tertiary. Herbivorous cattle, deer and goats are the primary consumers. Carnivores such as tigers, foxes and lions are secondary consumers. Some carnivores also eat other carnivores called higher carnivores, such as owls and sharks. In addition, consumers of animal carcasses are vultures and crows. Microorganisms that help dead plants decompose and dissolve into the soil are mainly various types of bacteria.
(d) Differentiate between depletable and renewable energy.
Answer: The difference between decaying and regenerative energy is-
1. All inorganic resources found in nature are perishable resources. Using such resources reduces the amount of the resource. On the other hand, resources that are not used up or can be reproduced even if they are used repeatedly are called renewable resources.
2. Examples of depletable resources are mineral oil, coal, natural gas, while examples of renewable energy are solar energy, hydropower, animals and plants.
(e) Classify energy resources with examples.
Answer: The day mankind learned to use fire, they actually learned to use energy resources. People learned to use coal, petroleum, etc. and made great progress in the use of energy resources. People used hydroelectric power, solar power, etc. to produce usable goods through the establishment of industries.
Energy resources can be divided into two main categories, depletable and renewable energy. Energy resources that are depleted forever once used are depletable energy. These energy resources include coal, petroleum, natural gas, nuclear fuels such as thorium and uranium, etc. As the use of these energies increases, they are gradually depleted.
Solar energy, wind energy, hydropower, geothermal energy, tidal energy are examples of renewable energy. The energy radiated from the Sun is used by all plants and animals, but the amount of energy remains the same. Improvements in the methods of extracting energy from these sources have made that energy easier.
(f) Explain what measures are needed for human resource development in Assam.
Answer: Human resources are more important than any other type of resource nowadays. Education, thought, science, discovery and application of techniques, efficiency and interest in work have made people more important than all kinds of resources. Countries that have succeeded in human resource development are considered to be the most developed countries in the world.
The four concepts of equality, rights, sustainability and productivity are called the four pillars of human resource development. As of 2011-12, the percentage of people living below the poverty line in India was 21.92 per cent. In contrast, the number of such people in Assam is 31.98 per cent. These data show that human resource development in Assam is lower than in other parts of the country. Special measures like education, health and per capita need to be taken for human resource development.
