The poem therefore expresses a common problem of lack of communication, emotional distance and the desire for understanding between parents and children.

2. How is the father’s helplessness brought out in the poem?

Answer: The father’s helplessness is shown through his inability to understand his son despite having lived with him for many years. He admits that he knows very little about his son and cannot share his interests.

The silence between them makes their relationship even more painful. The father wants to rebuild the bond, forgive his son and live together peacefully, but he does not know how to remove the emotional distance between them. Answer: The father is not against his son having an independent identity, but he is deeply hurt by the emotional separation between them.

He does not want his son’s independence to destroy their relationship. What he truly desires is mutual understanding, affection and communication. He wants his son to remain emotionally connected with him even while having his own thoughts and personality.

6. ‘...... we must live on the same globe and the same land’. Explain the significance of these lines.

Answer: These lines show the father’s desire for reconciliation.

He realises that despite their differences, he and his son must continue to live in the same world and share a common human bond. Therefore, instead of remaining emotionally separated, they should try to understand each other, overcome their differences and rebuild their relationship with love and forgiveness.

Answer: The poem begins with the personal experience of a father who cannot understand his son, but its theme is universal.

Differences between generations are common in many families. As children grow up, they develop independent ideas, interests and lifestyles that may differ from those of their parents. This can create misunderstanding and emotional distance.
