  Rip Van  Winkle

    Once upon a time there lived a man named Rip Van Winkle. He was a simple, sober and a kind neighbour. But he was lazy. So, his wife was sometimes angry with him. Then he would go away into the mountains to hide from her.

    Rip had a dog named Wolf. One day he and his dog climbed to the highest part of the mountains. They were tired. So they lay down on the green grass to rest.

    When Rip got up, a man called him by name and requested Rip to help him. The man was carrying a heavy barrel on his shoulder. Rip agreed to carry the barrel to a valley in the mountains.

    There he found a group of men playing a game. They looked very strange. They had short legs and long beards. They were wearing strange clothes. Rip was afraid of them.

    The man gave him a glass of pink water from the barrel. After drinking it, he fell into a deep sleep.

    When he woke up, he was alone. He rubbed his eyes. It was a bright, sunny morning. He called his dog but no dog came.

    Rip felt very weak and hungry. He started walking towards his village. The village had completely changed. The people of his village were also not familiar to him. He saw that his house had fallen down. People stared at him and the dog barked at him.

    Just then, a young woman peeped in through the crowd. Rip looked at her. She looked like his wife. He asked what her name was. She replied that her name was Judith. When Rip asked her what her father's name was, she told that her father's name was Rip Van Winkle. He had gone away from home with his dog twenty years ago and had never come back.

    He hugged his daughter and told that he was her father. Everyone was amazed. They laughed, and said, 'Welcome home again, neighbour. Where have you been for last twenty years?'

    Only Rip knew the answer. He had been asleep in the mountains for twenty years!
