One day Maharaja Naranarayana, the king of the Koch kingdom, was spending his time with the scholars assembled in his royal palace, Srimanta Sankaradeva was also present there. After long discussions on this and that point, the king requested the scholars about his interest in the Bhagavatapurana. He wanted the scholars to explain the contents of the holy book to him in a single day. The scholars present looked at one another. They exchanged speechless messages amongst themselves over the queer proposal of the king.

Meanwhile, Sankaradeva, immediately coming back home, sat in a trance, and started working for the work with his heart and soul fully fixed on to Lord Krishna. From within his mind and soul he got the design of his work of compressing the Bhagavatapurana, into a tiny version, hidable within his palm. For the composition of the work he remained awake throughout the night, and by the turn of the dawn he completed the work, and heaved a sigh of relief, as if he had won a battle royal. The night off keeping his eyes wide open. He looked at the sky to say something. He got a reply from the blues of the sky. After some pensive moments he named his composition- Gunamala- the name of the elephant pushed inside the pitcher.

He then left for his prayer, and got himself lost therein. He established a silent communion with the Lord, an experience that was simply inexplicable.
