Thinking about the Poem

I. 1. Can a "simple jab of the knife" kill a tree? Why not?

Ans- No, a "simple jab of the knife" cannot kill a tree. This is because a tree is deeply rooted in the earth, has grown strong over time, and merely cutting it superficially will not destroy it. The tree is resilient and can heal itself from surface wounds.

2. How has the tree grown to its full size? List the words suggestive of its life and activity.

Ans- The tree has grown slowly by consuming nutrients from the earth, absorbing sunlight, air, and water over many years. Words suggestive of its life and activity are:

  • "Slowly consuming the earth"
  • "Feeding upon its crust"
  • "Absorbing years of sunlight, air, water"
  • "Sprouting leaves"

3. What is the meaning of "bleeding bark"? What makes it bleed?

Ans- "Bleeding bark" refers to the sap that oozes out from the bark when the tree is cut or wounded. The cutting and chopping of the tree cause it to "bleed," which is metaphorical for the way the tree suffers when it's injured.

4. The poet says "No" in the beginning of the third stanza. What does he mean by this?

Ans- When the poet says "No" at the beginning of the third stanza, he is emphasizing that simply cutting or wounding the tree will not kill it. He is preparing the reader for the idea that something more drastic is needed—specifically, uprooting the tree entirely to kill it.

5. What is the meaning of "anchoring earth" and "earth cave"?

Ans- "Anchoring earth" refers to the ground that holds the tree securely in place through its roots.

"Earth cave" suggests the deep, hidden part of the earth where the tree's roots are embedded, giving the tree stability and nourishment.

6. What does he mean by "the strength of the tree exposed"?

Ans- "The strength of the tree exposed" means that when the roots of the tree are pulled out from the earth, its true source of power and vitality is revealed. The roots, which are usually hidden underground, are the real strength of the tree.

7. What finally kills the tree?

Ans- The tree is finally killed when its roots are pulled out from the earth completely. After this, the roots are exposed to sunlight and air, causing the tree to dry out, twist, wither, and die. The scorching and choking of the tree in the sun and air lead to its eventual death.
