Working with the text :
(āĻĒাāĻ ā§° āϏৈāϤে āĻাāĻŽ āĻā§°া:)
1. For how long do you think Connie had kept Jim's letter? Give reasons for your answer.
( āĻāύিāϝ়ে āĻিāĻŽā§° āĻিāĻ িāĻāύ āĻিāĻŽাāύ āĻĻিāύ āϧ⧰ি ā§°াāĻিāĻিāϞ āĻŦুāϞি āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻাāĻŦে? āĻāĻĒোāύাā§° āĻāϤ্āϤ⧰⧰ āĻাā§°āĻŖ āĻĻিāϝ়āĻ।)
Ans. Connie has had to keep Jim's letter for nearly 70 to 75 years for a long time. That's because she told the narrator how she reads it very often every day so she could feel Jim was close to her.
2. Why do you think the desk had been sold, and when?
( āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻিāϝ় āĻাāĻŦে āϝে āĻĄেāϏ্āĻāĻāύ āĻŦিāĻ্ā§°ী āĻā§°া āĻšৈāĻিāϞ, āĻā§°ু āĻেāϤিāϝ়া?)
Ans. The desk must have been sold when the house in which Connie Macpherson lived had caught fire. She was taken to a nursing home. All the burnt up things must have been sold after that.
3. Why do Jim and Hans think that games or sports are good ways of resolving conflicts?
( āĻিāĻŽ āĻā§°ু āĻšাāύ্āϏে āĻিāϝ় āĻাāĻŦে āϝে āĻেāϞ āĻŦা āĻ্ā§°ীāĻĄ়া āĻšৈāĻে āĻŦিāĻŦাāĻĻ āϏāĻŽাāϧাāύ⧰ āĻাāϞ āĻāĻĒাāϝ়?)
Ans. Jim and Hans thought that games or sports are good ways of resolving conflicts because nobody dies in matches. No children are orphaned and no wives become widows. Due to these reasons games are good ways for resolving conflicts.
4. Do you think the soldiers of the two armies are like each other, or different from each other? Find evidence from the story to support your answer.
( āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻাāĻŦেāύে āϝে āĻĻুāϝ়োāĻা āϏৈāύ্āϝ⧰ āϏৈāύ্āϝāĻ āĻāĻāύে āϏিāĻāύ⧰ āĻĻā§°ে, āĻŦা āĻāĻāύে āϏিāĻāύ⧰ āĻĒā§°া āĻĒৃāĻĨāĻ? āĻāĻĒোāύাā§° āĻāϤ্āϤ⧰⧰ āϏāĻŽā§°্āĻĨāύ⧰ āĻŦাāĻŦে āĻাāĻšিāύীāĻোā§° āĻĒā§°া āĻĒ্ā§°āĻŽাāĻŖ āĻŦিāĻাā§°ি āĻāϞিāϝ়াāĻāĻ।)
Ans. The soldiers of the two armies were similar to each other. We can say this because they were friendly with each other, they ate food together, they played a football match and also celebrated Christmas together. Both the armies agreed that there should be peace among countries.
5. Mention the various ways in which the British and the German soldiers become friends and find things in common at Christmas.
( āĻŦ্ā§°িāĻিāĻ āĻā§°ু āĻাā§°্āĻŽাāύ āϏৈāύ্āϝāϏāĻāϞে āĻেāύেāϧ⧰āĻŖে āĻŦāύ্āϧু āĻšৈ āĻĒā§°ে āĻā§°ু āĻ্ā§°ীāώ্āĻāĻŽাāĻāϤ āĻŦāϏ্āϤুāĻŦোā§° āĻāĻে āϧ⧰āĻŖā§° āĻšāϝ় āϏেāĻ āĻŦিāώāϝ়ে āĻāϞ্āϞেāĻ āĻā§°āĻ।)
Ans. They shared the festive spirit of the Christmas. They got over hatred and played games, feasted and drank like good friends. Both hated war. Both were anxious to go back to their families at the end of war.
6. What is Connie's Christmas present? Why is it "the best Christmas present in the world"?
( āĻāύিā§° āĻ্ā§°ীāώ্āĻāĻŽাāĻā§° āĻāĻĒāĻšাā§° āĻি? āĻāĻāĻো āĻিāϝ় "āĻĒৃāĻĨিā§ąীā§° āϏ⧰্āĻŦāĻļ্ā§°েāώ্āĻ āĻ্ā§°ীāώ্āĻāĻŽাāĻ āĻāĻĒāĻšাā§°"?)
Ans. When the narrator came to see Connie and gave her the box, she mistook him for her husband Jim. She thought that Jim had come home for Christmas. This was Connie's Christmas present. It was the best Christmas present in the world for her because Jim had written in the letter that he would come home on Christmas.
7. Do you think the title of this story is suitable for it? Can you think of any other title(s)?
(āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻাāĻŦেāύে āϝে āĻāĻ āĻাāĻšিāύীāĻোā§° āĻļিā§°োāύাāĻŽāĻো āĻāϝ়াā§° āĻŦাāĻŦে āĻāĻĒāϝুāĻ্āϤ? āĻāĻĒুāύি āĻāύ āĻোāύো āĻļিā§°োāύাāĻŽā§° āĻāĻĨা āĻাāĻŦিāĻŦ āĻĒাā§°িāĻŦāύে?)
Ans. Yes, the title of the story is suitable for it. The spirit of Christmas is the theme that prevails throughout the story. It was on a Christmas day, in the middle of a raging war, that two warring troops made peace. The moment of peace that the soldiers shared with each other was the best Christmas present for them.
