Long Question Answer

1. What did the scholars of the state opine regarding the first question of the Tsar?

Ans. In his first question, the Tsar sought to know the best time to begin something. The scholars gave different solutions to this problem. Some advised to draw up in advance a table of days, months and years and to plan his actions accordingly. Other scholars advised to give close attention to the events taking place and decide which one was the most necessary to act upon. Some scholars advised the Tsar to keep a group of wise men while others advised the Tsar to consult magicians to meet a great urgency. The answers didn't satisfy the Tsar at all.

 2. What did the Tsar do to tend the wounded man?

Or, How did the Tsar nurse the wounded man?

Ans. The man's wound was bleeding profusely and he was moaning (মোনিং) in pain. He fell fainting on the ground. So the Tsar, along with the hermit, started to tend the wounded man. The Tsar bandaged the wound with his own handkerchief (হ্যান্কারচিফ) and a towel provided by the hermit. But as blood kept flowing, the Tsar washed and rebandaged (রি-ব্যান্ডেজড়) the wound several times. At last, the blood ceased (সিজড্) flowing and the man gradually revived. The Tsar gave him some fresh water to drink. Thereafter, the Tsar and the hermit carried the wounded man into the hut and laid him on the bed.

3. "'Forgive me,' said the bearded man..."-Who was the bearded man? Why did he ask for forgiveness?

Ans. The bearded man was an avowed enemy of the Tsar. The Tsar had executed his brother earlier and seized his property.

The man waited in ambush to avenge his brother's death, but as the Tsar did not return from the hermit's place, the man came out in search of the Tsar. At this time he came across the bodyguard of the Tsar who recognized the man and wounded him fatally. The man would have died as he was bleeding profusely, but the Tsar became his savior . He bandaged the wounds and provided him water and rest with the help of the hermit. Now the man repented his sin and prayed for the Tsar's forgiveness.

4. How did the Tsar spend the night at the hermit's place? What did he see after waking up?

Ans. The Tsar was involved in strenuous work at the hermit's place. His labor at the hermit's place and the strain that he undertook while nursing the wounded man made him extremely tired. He felt sleepy and crouched down on the threshold. The wounded man lay on the bed. Probably there was no spare bed in the room. So the Tsar

lay on the floor but enjoyed a sound sleep. • It was morning when the Tsar woke up. He found the wounded man staring at him with shining eyes. The Tsar took a long time to recollect the incidents of the previous day. He was surprised when the wounded man

5. What was the first question of the Tsar? Discuss the answer which he got to this question?

Ans. The first question of the Tsar was about knowing the right time to begin an action.

The Tsar was explained by the hermit that the most important time is the present for it is the only time over which we have got any power and control. The present is the result of our past and our future is the result of our present. So what we do in our present has a huge impact on our future. The Tsar helped the hermit and the wounded man according to the need of the time. The man remained alive and befriended an enemy. The hermit thus explained the answer he gave.

6. How did the Tsar find out the answers to his three questions?

Ans. The Tsar had three specific questions. But the answers were not found easily. None of the scholars could satisfy the Tsar. So he went to a hermit known for his wisdom. Seeing the hermit working hard, the Tsar did the work for him. This incidentally helped him to make peace with his avowed enemy who came to kill the Tsar but was saved by the Tsar. The hermit elucidated the entire incident to show that the most important time is present, the most important person is the present associate and the most important thing is to do good to that associate. Thus the Tsar found out the answers from his own experience.

7. Who, according to you, is the most important person in the story the hermit, the Tsar, or the wounded man?

Ans. It seems obvious that the most important person in the story is the hermit. It's true that the Tsar was sincerely pursuing the answers to his questions, but the hermit played the pivotal role of a teacher and a guide. He made the Tsar learn the answers from his own experiences. If the hermit had continued working, the Tsar would not have had a chance to stay and help. As a result the Tsar on his return journey would have been killed. The wounded man was an agent through whom the Tsar got his answers. But the hermit with his wisdom interpreted the events. So he is the most important person in the story.

8. How did the hermit explain the answer to the third question?

Ans. The Tsar's third question was about the most important thing to do at a particular time. The hermit suggested that the most important thing to do is to make people around us happy. The hermit said that the Tsar had shown sympathy by digging the seed bed. What the Tsar hadn't known was that his avowed enemy had been planning a surprise attack on him. If the Tsar hadn't decided to help the hermit, he would have returned early and got killed. Again, if the Tsar had not helped the wounded man, the man, his enemy would not have made peace with him so eagerly So the most necessary thing for a man is to help others around him. This would keep him safe from trouble.

9. Why do you think that the hermit did not give direct answer to the Tsar's questions till the end?

Ans. The hermit was a wise man and knew that first hand experience is required for the answers to the Tsar's questions. Despite the Tsar's repeated requests the hermit did not give prompt answers. The Tsar saved the life of an unknown enemy and made peace with him. Then only the hermit told him that his questions had been answered. The hermit could have explained the answers earlier but he knew that one learns only through personal experience. This deep insight about human psychology prompted him not to give the Tsar a pre-conceived answer. He wanted the Tsar to learn from his own experiences.
