 "The Wonderful Words"

Comprehension Questions and Answers:

1.What does the poet suggest about thoughts that are not expressed?

Answer: The poet suggests that thoughts can "shrivel and die" if not given a way to be expressed. If you don't express your thoughts, they remain trapped inside, unable to grow or be fully realized.

2.What is the poet's view on the importance of words in communication?

Answer: The poet views words as essential for expressing thoughts clearly and beautifully. Words give life and shape to our thoughts, allowing us to communicate them effectively with others.

3.According to the poem, how can we bring out our thoughts clearly and beautifully?

Answer: The poem suggests that to bring out our thoughts clearly and beautifully, we need to match words to the thoughts in our heads so that they come out "clear and true" and "handsomely groomed and fed."

4.What does the poet mean by "Words are the food and dress of thought"?

Answer: The poet means that words provide nourishment and shape to thoughts. Just like food gives life to the body and dress gives shape and form, words give structure and expression to our thoughts.

5.What does the poet say about the potential of unspoken thoughts?

Answer:
The poet suggests that many beautiful thoughts have never been said. This implies that unspoken thoughts have the potential to be marvelous and unique but remain hidden if not expressed.

6.What does the poet encourage readers to do with their thoughts?

Answer:
The poet encourages readers to express their thoughts using words. By doing so, their thoughts can be set free from their "prison" and shared with the world.

7.What is meant by "Only words can free a thought from its prison behind your eyes"?

Answer: This means that thoughts are confined in the mind, and they can only be set free when we express them using words. Words allow us to share our thoughts and make them visible to others.

8.Why does the poet say that many of the loveliest things have never been said?

Answer:
The poet says this because some of the most beautiful and powerful thoughts remain unspoken, perhaps because people do not have the words to express them or are afraid to share them.

Activity-Based Questions and Answers:

1.Can you think of a time when you had a brilliant thought but couldn't express it? What would you have said if you could?

Answer: (This question encourages personal reflection, so the answer will vary. A possible answer might be: "I once had a great idea for a science project, but I couldn't find the right words to explain it. If I had the chance, I would have explained it by talking about how I could combine environmental science with technology to reduce waste.")

2.Write a short poem or paragraph where you express a thought you've had recently, using clear and beautiful words.

Answer: (This will also vary based on individual thought and creativity. An example might be: "The sky is a canvas, painted with hues of pink and blue, as the sun rises to greet the world anew. Each morning brings fresh hope, a chance to start again, and the promise of brighter days ahead.")

3.How do you think words can "free" a thought? Can you relate this to any experience where expressing yourself made you feel better or more understood?

Answer: Words can free a thought by allowing it to be shared with others, making it real and tangible. For example, expressing how I felt during a difficult time helped me feel understood and less alone.
Once I spoke about it, I was able to see the situation more clearly and find solutions.

4.The poet mentions "handsomely groomed and fed" words. How would you describe well-chosen, clear words? Can you think of any examples of effective communication you’ve encountered?

Answer: Well-chosen, clear words are those that are precise, thoughtful, and beautifully put together. They help convey the intended meaning without confusion. An example of effective communication could be a speech by a leader that inspires and motivates people because the words are powerful, clear, and carefully chosen.

Discussion Questions and Answers:

1.Do you think language limits or enhances our ability to think and express ourselves? Why or why not?

Answer: Language enhances our ability to think and express ourselves because it gives structure to our thoughts and allows us to communicate complex ideas. Without language, we would be limited in our ability to share and understand new concepts.

2.The poem encourages the reader to use words to express thoughts clearly. What role do you think language plays in shaping the way we think?

Answer: Language plays a crucial role in shaping our thoughts because the words we use influence how we perceive and organize our ideas. The more words we know, the more precisely we can think and communicate our ideas.

3.The poet says that some thoughts have never been said before. What do you think this means, and how can language help bring these new ideas to light?

Answer: This means that many thoughts are never shared because people may not have the right words to express them or may feel unsure about sharing them. Language can bring these new ideas to light by giving us the tools to articulate them clearly, allowing others to hear and appreciate them.
