1. From where did the peddler get the idea of the world being a rattrap?

পৃথিবীটা একটা ইঁদুরের ফাঁদ, এই ধারণাটা তুমি কোথা থেকে পেলে?

Answer: One day the peddler was thinking of his rattraps. Suddenly he was struck by an idea. His rattraps reminded him of one thing. The whole world about him was nothing but a rattrap. Its lands, seas, cities and villages existed only to set baits for people. It offered riches and joys, shelter and food as baits. They were like rattraps which offered cheese and pork for rats.

একদিন ফেরিওয়ালা তার ইঁদুরের ফাঁদ নিয়ে ভাবছিল। হঠাৎ তার মাথায় একটা বুদ্ধি এলো। তার রিট্র্যাপ তাকে একটা জিনিস মনে করিয়ে দিল। তার চারপাশের পুরো পৃথিবীটা একটা ফাঁদ ছাড়া আর কিছুই ছিল না। এর ভূমি, সমুদ্র, শহর এবং গ্রামগুলি কেবল মানুষের জন্য শীর্ষস্থান নির্ধারণের জন্য বিদ্যমান ছিল। এটি সম্পদ ও আনন্দ, আশ্রয় এবং খাদ্যকে কল হিসেবে প্রদান করত। তারা ছিল ইঁদুরের ফাঁদের মতো যারা ইঁদুরদের জন্য পনির এবং শুয়োরের মাংস সরবরাহ করত।

2. Why was he amused by this idea?

কেন তিনি এই ধারণাটি নিয়ে আগ্রহী হয়েছিলেন?

Answer: The peddler was amused by the idea of the world being a big rattrap. All its riches and joys, shelter and food were just baits. They were to trap the people in. People run after such things and suffer in the end. In this way, he could philosophise his sad and monotonous life.

3. Did the peddler expect the kind of hospitality that he received from the crofter?

Answer: No, the peddler never expected that kind of hospitality. He expected “sour faces” greeting him. He knocked at the door of the cottage to ask shelter for the night. He was pleasantly received. The host was happy to get someone to talk to in his loneliness. He was served with supper and given tobacco for smoking. He played “mjolis” with the host.

4. Why was the crofter so talkative and friendly with the peddler?

Answer: The crofter was only serving himself by serving the peddler. He was an old man without wife or child. Naturally, he was happy to get someone to talk to in his loneliness. So he was so talkative and friendly with the peddler.

5. Why did he show the thirty kronor to the peddler?

কেন সে ফেরিওয়ালাকে ত্রিশটি ক্রোনার দেখালো?

Answer: He showed the thirty kronors merely to test and tempt his guest. The old man took down a leather pouch which hung on the window frame. He picked out three wrinkled ten-kronor banknotes before the eyes of the peddler. Then he stuffed them back into the pouch. He did so to set a bait for the peddler.

সে কেবল তার অতিথিকে পরীক্ষা করার এবং প্রলুব্ধ করার জন্য ত্রিশক্রোনা দেখিয়েছিল। বৃদ্ধ লোকটি জানালার ফ্রেমে ঝুলন্ত একটি চামড়ার থলি নামিয়ে ফেলেছিলেন। সে বিক্রেতার চোখের সামনে তিনটি কুঁচকানো দশ ক্রোনার নোট এনে দিল। তারপর সে সেগুলো আবার বস্তার ভেতরে রাখল। তিনি ফেরিওয়ালার জন্য একটি কল নির্ধারণ করার জন্য এটি করেছিলেন।

6. Did the peddler respect the confidence reposed in him by the crofter?

Answer: No, the peddler didn’t respect the confidence reposed in him by the crofter. He fell an easy prey to temptation. Half an hour later, he stood again before the window. He smashed a pane and stuck in his hand. He got hold of the pouch and took out the money. It was a breach of faith.

7. What made the peddler think that he had indeed fallen into a rattrap?

পাচারকারী কেন ভাবল যে সে আসলেই একটা ফাঁদে পা দিয়েছে?

Answer: The peddler recalled his thoughts about the world and rattrap. Now his own turn had come. He had let himself befooled by a bait and had been caught. He thought of the thirty kronors that he stole. And now the ironmaster was inviting him to his manor house. He was throwing himself into the lion’s den.

ফেরিওয়ালা পৃথিবী এবং ইঁদুরের ফাঁদ সম্পর্কে তার চিন্তাভাবনা স্মরণ করল। এবার তার পালা। সে নিজেকে একটা ট্যাপে বোকা বানাতে দিল এবং ধরা পড়ল। সে চুরি যাওয়া ত্রিশকরণের কথা ভাবল। আর এখন লৌহকার তাকে তার জমিদার বাড়িতে আমন্ত্রণ জানাচ্ছিলেন। সে নিজেকে সিংহের খাদে ঝাঁপিয়ে পড়েছিল।

8. Why did the ironmaster speak kindly to the peddler and invite him home?

কেন ইস্ত্রি মাস্টার পাচারকারীর সাথে সদয়ভাবে কথা বললেন এবং তাকে বাড়িতে আমন্ত্রণ জানালেন?

Answer: The ironmaster took the peddler for an old acquaintance. He had seen the stranger in darkness. The ironmaster’s wife was dead. His boys were abroad. Only his eldest daughter was with him. They didn’t have any company for Christmas. So the ironmaster spoke kindly to the peddler and invited him home.

লৌহবিদ ফেরিওয়ালাকে পুরনো পরিচয় বলে ধরে নিলেন। অন্ধকারে সে অপরিচিত ব্যক্তিটিকে দেখতে পেল। লৌহশিল্পীর স্ত্রী মারা গেছেন। তার ছেলেরা বিদেশে ছিল। তার সাথে কেবল তার বড় মেয়ে ছিল। ক্রিসমাসে তাদের কোনও সঙ্গ ছিল না। তাই ইস্ত্রি মাস্টার পাচারকারীর সাথে সদয়ভাবে কথা বললেন এবং তাকে বাড়িতে আমন্ত্রণ জানালেন।

9. Why did the peddler decline the invitation?

কেন ফেরিওয়ালা আমন্ত্রণ প্রত্যাখ্যান করলেন?

Answer: The ironmaster invited the peddler to come home with him. But it didn’t please the peddler. He looked quite alarmed. It would be like throwing himself voluntarily into the lion’s den. Perhaps the ironmaster was throwing a bait. He didn’t  want to be caught in. Therefore, he declined the invitation.

লৌহশিল্পী ফেরিওয়ালাকে তার সাথে বাড়িতে আসার জন্য আমন্ত্রণ জানালেন। কিন্তু তাতে ফেরিওয়ালা সন্তুষ্ট হননি। তাকে বেশ সতর্ক দেখাচ্ছিল। এটা স্বেচ্ছায় নিজেকে সিংহের গর্তে ফেলে দেওয়ার মতো হবে। সম্ভবত লৌহশিল্পী কামান ছুঁড়েছিলেন। সে ধরা পড়তে চায়নি। তাই, তিনি আমন্ত্রণ প্রত্যাখ্যান করলেন।


10. What made the peddler accept Edla Willmansson’s invitation?

কেন ফেরিওয়ালা এডলা উইলম্যানসনের আমন্ত্রণ গ্রহণ করলেন?

Answer: Miss Willmansson, ironmaster’s daughter, came to the forge to persuade him. She looked at him compassionately. She requested him to stay with them over Christmas Eve. Her friendly and persuasive manner made him accept her invitation. 

আয়রনমাস্টারের মেয়ে মিস উইলম্যানসন তাকে বোঝাতে ফোর্জে এসেছিলেন। সে সহানুভূতির দৃষ্টিতে তার দিকে তাকাল। সে তাকে ক্রিসমাসের আগের দিন তাদের সাথে থাকার জন্য অনুরোধ করল। তার বন্ধুত্বপূর্ণ এবং অনুপ্রেরণামূলক আচরণ তাকে তার আমন্ত্রণ গ্রহণ করতে বাধ্য করেছিল।

11. What doubts did Edla have about the peddler?

Answer: Miss Willmansson saw the peddler carefully. She seemed to be quite frightened. She had doubts that he had stolen something . It was also possible that he had escaped from the prison. He was having a hard time. Things had gone downhill with him very badly. He didn’t look like an educated man.

12. When did the ironmaster realise his mistake?

লৌহশিল্পী কখন বুঝতে পারলেন যে তিনি ভুল করছেন?

Answer: The peddler stood well groomed in front of his host. Now he saw him in broad daylight. The ironmaster didn’t seem to be pleased. Now everything became quite clear. There was no scope of any mistake. He was not his old regimental comrade. The ironmaster felt cheated and realised his mistake.

ফেরিওয়ালা তার হোস্টের সামনে সুসজ্জিতভাবে দাঁড়িয়ে ছিল। এখন সে তাকে দিনের আলোতে দেখতে পেল। ইস্ত্রি মাস্টার সন্তুষ্ট বলে মনে হলো না। এখন সবকিছু সম্পূর্ণ পরিষ্কার। ভুলের কোন অবকাশ ছিল না। সে তার পুরনো রেজিমেন্টাল কমরেড ছিল না। লৌহশিল্পী প্রতারিত বোধ করলেন এবং অনুভব করলেন যে তিনি ভুল।

13. What did the peddler say in his defence when it was clear that he was not the person the ironmaster had thought he was?

যখন স্পষ্ট হয়ে গেল যে লৌহশিল্পী তাকে যে ব্যক্তি হিসেবে ভেবেছিলেন, সে সেই ব্যক্তি নন, তখন ফেরিওয়ালা তার আত্মপক্ষ সমর্থনে কী বলেছিলেন?

Answer: It was clear that the peddler was not the person the ironmaster had thought he was. The peddler defended himself. He didn’t cheat anybody. He never pretended to be any thing but a poor peddler. He meant no harm to them. He could put on his rags again and go away.

14. Why did Edla still entertain the peddler even after she knew the truth about him?

এডলা কেন ফেরিওয়ালা সম্পর্কে সত্য জানা সত্ত্বেও তাকে আপ্যায়ন করল?

Answer: The peddler’s identity had been exposed. The ironmaster asked him to go away at once. But his daughter Miss Edla Willmansson still thought differently. The peddler was not welcome anywhere. He should enjoy at least  a day of peace with them. They had invited, and “promised him Christmas cheer”.

ফেরিওয়ালার পরিচয় উন্মোচিত হয়েছিল। লৌহশিল্পী তাকে একেবারে চলে যেতে বললেন। কিন্তু তার মেয়ে মিস এডলা উইলম্যানসন তখনও অন্য কথা ভাবছিলেন। ফেরিওয়ালাকে কোথাও স্বাগত জানানো হয়নি। তার অন্তত একদিন তাদের সাথে শান্তিতে থাকা উচিত। তারা তাকে আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়েছিল এবং "বড়দিনের আনন্দের প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিল"।

15. Why was Edla happy to see the gift left by the peddler?

বিক্রেতার রেখে যাওয়া উপহারটি দেখে এডলা কেন খুশি হয়েছিল?

Answer: Edla was happy to see the gift left for her by the peddler. Her father didn’t have good opinion about him. At the church they heard that a man who sold rattraps had robbed the old crofter. The peddler had left thirty kronors for their rightful owner. She was happy to note that he was not a theif. She felt happy and grateful to him.

বিক্রেতার রেখে যাওয়া উপহারটি দেখে এডলা খুশি হল। তার বাবার তার সম্পর্কে ভালো ধারণা ছিল না। গির্জায় তারা শুনেছিল যে ইঁদুরের ফাঁদ বিক্রি করা এক ব্যক্তি পুরানো ক্রাফটারের দোকানটি লুট করেছে। ফেরিওয়ালা তাদের ন্যায্য উপপত্নীর জন্য ত্রিশটি মুকুট রেখে গিয়েছিল। সে এটা জেনে খুশি হল যে সে চোর ছিল না। সে তার প্রতি খুশি এবং কৃতজ্ঞ বোধ করল।

16. Why did the peddler sign himself as Captain von stahle?

কেন ফেরিওয়ালা নিজেকে ক্যাপ্টেন ভন স্টাহল হিসেবে স্বাক্ষর করলেন?

Answer: The peddler was a vagabond. But at the ironmaster’s house he was honoured as captain. In this role, he raised himself above petty temptations. He escaped being caught into the world’s rattrap. Kindness and hospitality shown by Edla towards him moved him completely. So he signed himself as captain Von Stahle.

ফেরিওয়ালা ছিল একজন ভাবঘুরে। কিন্তু ইস্ত্রি মাস্টারের বাড়িতে তাকে ক্যাপ্টেন হিসেবে সম্মানিত করা হয়েছিল। এই ভূমিকায়, তিনি নিজেকে ক্ষুদ্র প্রলোভনের ঊর্ধ্বে তুলে ধরেন। পৃথিবীর ফাঁদে আটকা পড়ার পরও সে বেঁচে গিয়েছিল। এডলার দয়া এবং আতিথেয়তায় তিনি সম্পূর্ণরূপে অভিভূত হয়ে পড়েন। তাই তিনি নিজেকে ক্যাপ্টেন ভন স্টাহল হিসেবে স্বাক্ষর করেন।

UNDERSTANDING THE TEXT

1. How does the peddler interpret the acts of kindness and hospitality shown by the crofter, the ironmaster and his daughter?

লৌহশিল্পী, লোহার মালিক এবং তার মেয়ের দেখানো দয়া এবং আতিথেয়তার কাজগুলিকে ফেরিওয়ালা কীভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করে?

Answer: The peddler goes around selling small rattraps. He resorts to both begging and small thefts to keep his body and soul together. He interprets the acts of kindness and hospitality shown by different people differently. But Miss Edla’s kindness and sympathy arouse basic human qualities in him.

ফেরিওয়ালা ছোট ছোট ইঁদুরের ফাঁদ বিক্রি করে ঘুরে বেড়ায়। সে তার শরীর ও আত্মাকে একত্রে রাখার জন্য ভিক্ষাবৃত্তি এবং ছোটখাটো চুরি উভয়েরই আশ্রয় নিয়েছে। তিনি বিভিন্ন মানুষের দেখানো দয়া এবং আতিথেয়তার কাজগুলিকে ভিন্নভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করেন। কিন্তু মিস অ্যাডলার দয়া এবং সহানুভূতি তার মধ্যে মৌলিক মানবিক গুণাবলী জাগ্রত করে।

                     The older crofter gives him a pleasant surprise. He is happy to find a man who he can talk to in his loneliness. He offers him super. They play “mjolis”. But the peddler violates the confidence that the host responses in him. He runs away with his money. Similarly, the peddler doesn’t seem to be much impressed by the kindness and hospitality shown by ironmaster. He  considers going to the manor house just like entering a  lion’s den. He doesn’t want to be trapped in.

বড় ক্রাফটারেরা তাকে একটা আনন্দদায়ক চমক দেয়। সে এমন কাউকে পেয়ে খুশি যার সাথে সে তার নির্জনে কথা বলতে পারে। সে তাকে সুপার দেয়। তারা "মজোলিচ" বাজায়। তবে, পাচারকারী হোস্টের প্রতি তার যে আস্থা রয়েছে তা লঙ্ঘন করে। সে তার টাকা নিয়ে পালিয়ে যায়। একইভাবে, লৌহশিল্পীর দেখানো দয়া এবং আতিথেয়তায় ফেরিওয়ালা খুব একটা মুগ্ধ বলে মনে হচ্ছে না। সে মনে করে মানোর বাড়িতে যাওয়াটা যেন সিংহের খাদে প্রবেশ করা। সে আটকা পড়তে চায় না।

                            Finally, the  ironmaster’s daughter awakes the essential goodness in the peddler. He doesn’t want to put her to shame. He leaves thirty kronors to be given back to the old crofter. He writes a letter expressing his gratitude to her. He also leaves a Christmas present for her.

অবশেষে, ইস্ত্রি মাস্টারের মেয়ে ফেরিওয়ালার অপরিহার্য সদ্গুণকে জাগিয়ে তোলে। সে তাকে বিব্রত করতে চায় না। সে ত্রিশটি মুকুট রেখে যায় পুরাতন ক্রফটারের কাছে ফিরে যাওয়ার জন্য। সে তার প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করে একটি চিঠি লিখেছে। সে তার জন্য একটি ক্রিসমাস উপহারও রেখে যায়।

2. What are the instances in the story that show that the character of the ironmaster is  different from that of his daughter in many ways?

গল্পে এমন কোন উদাহরণ আছে যা দেখায় যে লৌহশিল্পীর চরিত্র তার মেয়ের চরিত্র থেকে অনেক দিক থেকেই আলাদা?

Answer: The character of the ironmaster is different from that of his  daughter. Miss Edla Willmansson. Various instances prove it. He is quite social  and a good host. They don’t have any company for Christmas. The ironmaster wants to invite the peddler at the farm-house but doesn’t succeed. He knows that Edla has more persuasive power than him. So he sends his daughter to persuade the peddler.

লৌহশিল্পীর চরিত্র তার মেয়ের চরিত্র থেকে আলাদা। মিস এডলা উইলম্যানসন। বিভিন্ন উদাহরণ এটি প্রমাণ করে। সে বেশ সামাজিক এবং একজন ভালো অতিথিপরায়ণ। ক্রিসমাসে তাদের কোনও সঙ্গ নেই। আয়রনমাস্টার ফেরিওয়ালাকে খামারবাড়িতে আমন্ত্রণ জানাতে চায় কিন্তু ব্যর্থ হয়। সে জানে যে অ্যাডলারের তার চেয়ে বেশি প্রেরণাদায়ক শক্তি আছে। তাই সে তার মেয়েকে পাঠায় তাকে রাজি করানোর জন্য।

      Edla has basic human qualities. She has love and sympathy for the unfortunate people. Very soon  she wins the confidence of the peddler.

অ্যাডলারের মৌলিক মানবিক গুণাবলী রয়েছে। দুর্ভাগ্যবানদের প্রতি তার ভালোবাসা এবং সহানুভূতি রয়েছে। সে শীঘ্রই ফেরিওয়ালার আস্থা অর্জন করে।

        At last, the ironmaster comes to know the truth about the peddler. He becomes angry and threatens to call the sheriff. But Miss Edla Willmansson insists on his stay there. He is not welcome anywhere. The man whom they had invited and promised Christmas cheer must be chased away. She feels happy to find that the peddler is not a thief. He leaves thirty kronors to be given back to the old crofter. He also leaves a Christmas present for Edla.

অবশেষে, ইস্ত্রি মাস্টার ফেরিওয়ালা সম্পর্কে সত্য জানতে পারলেন। সে রেগে গেল এবং শেরিফকে ফোন করার হুমকি দিল। কিন্তু মিস এডলা উইলম্যানসন সেখানে থাকার জন্য জোর দিয়েছিলেন। তাকে কোথাও স্বাগত জানানো হবে না। যাকে তারা আমন্ত্রণ জানিয়ে বড়দিনের আনন্দের প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিল, তাকে অবশ্যই তাড়িয়ে দিতে হবে। সে খুশি যে ফেরিওয়ালা চোর নয়। সে ত্রিশটি মুকুট রেখে যায় পুরাতন ক্রফটারের কাছে ফিরে যাওয়ার জন্য। সে আদলার জন্য একটি ক্রিসমাস উপহারও রেখে গেছে।

3. The story has many instances of unexpected reactions from the characters to others’ behaviour. Pick out instances of these surprises.

গল্পটিতে চরিত্রগুলির অন্যদের আচরণের প্রতি অপ্রত্যাশিত প্রতিক্রিয়ার অনেক উদাহরণ রয়েছে। এই বিস্ময়কর জিনিসগুলির উদাহরণ নির্বাচন করুন।

Answer: The story “The Rattrap” is full of surprises. Characters often behave quite unexpectedly. The peddler’s character is full of contradictions. He sells small rattraps. But he doesn’t mind begging. He even resorts to petty thievery. The vagabond strangely has a philosophical attitude towards life.

"দ্য র‍্যাটট্র্যাপ" গল্পটি এখনও অসাধারণ। চরিত্রগুলি প্রায়শই বেশ অপ্রত্যাশিতভাবে আচরণ করে। ফেরিওয়ালার চরিত্রটি নানান বিরোধিতায় পূর্ণ। সে ছোট ইঁদুরের ফাঁদ বিক্রি করে। কিন্তু ভিক্ষা করতে তার আপত্তি নেই। এমনকি সে ছোটখাটো তত্ত্বের আশ্রয় নেয়। ভাবঘুরের জীবনের প্রতি এক দার্শনিক দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি রয়েছে।

                Old crofter’s reaction too is quite unexpected. They have supper together, smoke and  play “mjolis”. He proves to be a good host.  The behaviour of the peddler towards such a host is also quite unexpected. His  stealing of thirty kronors from the old man’s pouch is an act of thanklessness and ingratitude.

বৃদ্ধ ক্রোফটারের প্রতিক্রিয়াও বেশ অপ্রত্যাশিত। তারা একসাথে রাতের খাবার খায়, ধূমপান করে এবং "মজলিস" খেলে। তিনি একজন ভালো হোস্ট হিসেবে প্রমাণিত হয়েছেন।  এই ধরনের হোস্টের প্রতি ফেরিওয়ালাদের আচরণও বেশ অপ্রত্যাশিত। বৃদ্ধের থলি থেকে ত্রিশটি মুকুট চুরি হওয়া কৃতজ্ঞতা এবং অকৃতজ্ঞতার একটি কাজ।

               Uncertainty reaches its climax when the ironmaster comes to know the truth about the peddler. He threatens to call the sheriff and then asks him to go away at once. The peddler tells that he never intends to cheat  him. Nor he means  any harm to them. So, the behaviour of the host is quite unexpected. We are surprised when Miss Edla Willmansson insists on  his stay  against the wish of her father. The end of the story  itself is quite surprising. When declared a thief, the vagabond raises his character to new heights. He leaves 30 kronors to be given back to its rightful owner. He also leaves  a Christmas gift for Edla.

4. What made the peddler finally change his ways?

বিক্রেতাটি অবশেষে কী কারণে তার পথ পরিবর্তন করলেন?

Answer: In the end the peddler seems to be quite a transformed character. From a seller of  small rattraps and a petty thief, he raises himself to the height of a gentleman. The  basic human goodness uplifts him. This essential goodness in him is awakened through understanding and love of Miss Edla Willmanson. The peddler finally changes his ways and behaves like a perfect gentleman in the end.

শেষ পর্যন্ত, ফেরিওয়ালাটি বেশ পরিবর্তিত চরিত্র বলে মনে হচ্ছে। একজন ছোটখাটো বিক্রেতা এবং একজন তুচ্ছ চোর থেকে, সে নিজেকে একজন ভদ্রলোকের উচ্চতায় উন্নীত করে। মৌলিক মানবিক সদ্ভাব তাকে উন্নত করে। মিস এডলা উইলম্যানসনের বোঝাপড়া এবং ভালোবাসার মাধ্যমে তার মধ্যে এই অপরিহার্য সদ্গুণ জাগ্রত হয়। ফেরিওয়ালা অবশেষে তার পথ পরিবর্তন করে এবং একজন নিখুঁত ভদ্রলোকের মতো আচরণ করে।

               When the truth about him is exposed, the ironmaster can’t tolerate his  presence any  more. But Edla feels sorry for the unfortunate man. She wants to have him enjoy a day  of peace with them. She thinks it unethical to chase away  a guest. They had invited and  promised him “Christmas cheer”.

                It is ironical that the peddler mends his ways when he is thought to be  a theif. But that doesn’t happen. Edla’s human behaviour and kindness  have changed him. He leaves  thirty kornors to be returned to its rightful owner. He also leaves a Christmas gift for  Edla.

5. How does the metaphor of the rattrap serve to highlight the human predicament?

ইঁদুর ফাঁদের রূপক কীভাবে মানুষের দুর্দশার কথা তুলে ধরে?

Answer: In the short story “The Rattrap” the author Selma Lagerlof uses the metaphor of the rattrap very effectively. It uses to highlight human predicament. He is struck by an idea. The whole world is nothing but a big rattrap. It sets baits for people. The riches and joys, shelter and food, are just baits. The moment one is tempted to touch the bait, the rattrap closes in on him. Then everything comes to an end.

                The peddler is lost in a big and confusing forest. Now his own turn has come. He has let himself befooled by a bait. Those thirty kronors that he stole prove to be a bait. Again the metaphor of the rattrap comes alive. The ironmaster invites the peddler to his manor house. He refuses to go there. Going there will mean like going voluntarily into the lion’s den. The peddler describes human  predicament to the ironmaster. The peddler would have been trapped in had he not raised himself above petty temptations.

ফেরিওয়ালা একটা বিশাল এবং বিভ্রান্তিকর বনে হারিয়ে গেছে। এবার তার পালা। সে নিজেকে কামানের বোকা বানিয়েছে। তার চুরি করা তিনটি মুকুটই কামান বলে প্রমাণিত হলো। আবারও, ইঁদুরের ফাঁদের রূপকটি জীবন্ত হয়ে উঠল। লৌহবিদ ফেরিওয়ালাকে তার বাড়িতে আমন্ত্রণ জানান। সে সেখানে যেতে অস্বীকৃতি জানায়। সেখানে যাওয়াটা স্বেচ্ছায় সিংহের খাদে যাওয়ার মতো হবে। ফেরিওয়ালা লৌহশিল্পীর কাছে মানুষের দুর্দশার বর্ণনা দেয়। যদি সে নিজেকে তুচ্ছ প্রলোভনের ঊর্ধ্বে না তুলত, তাহলে ফেরিওয়ালা আটকা পড়ত।

6. The peddler comes out as a person with a subtle sense of humour. How does this serve in lightening the seriousness of the theme of the story and also endear him to us?

Answer:  Selma Lagerlof presents the character of the peddler with a great sense of humour. The vagabond is not overburdened with mortality. He doesn’t mind resorting to both begging and petty thievery. It keeps his body and soul together. He doesn’t allow the sad and monotonous life to overpower him. He has a natural tendency to philosophise life. It makes life less burdensome. His sense of humour makes him accept that he is a rat. All other human beings are so. The world is nothing but a big rattrap. Its riches and joys are like baits. Anyone who touches the bait, the rattrap closes in on him. Then everything comes to an end.

                The encounter of the ironmaster and the peddler brings out his unfailing sense of humour. The ironmaster mistakes him for an old acquaintance. The peddler lets this misunderstanding to prevail upon him. He warns the ironmaster that he too “will get caught in the trap”. Even the ironmaster accepts that it was “not so badly said”.
