In childhood the Sheridans' children were prohibited to go there so that they could not catch the revolting language. In the locality their poor cottages were the greatest eyesore to the elites like the Sheridans.

She was in a fix- in a dilemma between her loyalty and sense of value. As Laura looked at herself wearing the hat, she somehow started to thinking her idea to cancel the party was really absurd. The glimpses of poor Mrs. Scott, her children seemed to her quite unreal, blurred like a picture in the newspaper. crushed grass were ringing within her. She couldn't feel the helplessness of the widow with five kids. Looking at the sky she could only feel the success of the party. As Laura crossed the broad road and entered the smoky and dark lane, she could feel the difference. There was a little hum somewhere. A crab-like flicker of light and shadow moved across the window. Men hung on the palings. The atmosphere was totally opposite of which she was used to. Her shining gown or gorgeous hat was quite out of place there.
