Ans. The king had no descendent to inherit his name, wealth and kingdom. That is why the king was anxious to have a son.
A religious mendicant offered to help him. He said that he would give the queen a medicine. After swallowing that, she would give birth to twin sons. That is how the mendicant offered to help the king.
He also said that the king and queen would have to hand over one of those twin sons to him and keep the other with them. This was the condition he imposed.

Ans. After swallowing the mendicant's medicine, the queen would give birth to twin sons. But they would have to hand over one of them to him. It is very painful for any father and mother to part away with their son or daughter. That is why, the mendicant's condition appeared somewhat hard to the king and the queen.
The king was anxious to have a son so that he could pass on his name, wealth and kingdom to that son. So he accepted the condition in spite of it being very hard.
When the mendicant did not appear to claim his share for as many as sixteen years, the king and the queen thought that as he was old he was no more in the world.
[সন্ন্যাসীর ওষুধটি (গিলে) খাওয়ার পর রানি যমজ পুত্রসন্তানদের জন্ম দেবেন। কিন্তু তাদের একজনকে সন্ন্যাসীকে দিয়ে দিতে হবে। যে-কোনো বাবা বা মা-এর পক্ষে তাঁদের পুত্র বা কন্যাসন্তান-এর সঙ্গে বিচ্ছেদ খুবই কষ্টদায়ক। তাই সন্ন্যাসীর শর্তটি রাজা এবং রানির কাছে খানিকটা কঠিন (নির্দয়) বলে মনে হয়েছিল।
রাজা, পুত্র সন্তান-এর জন্য ব্যাকুল ছিলেন তাঁর নাম, সম্পত্তি ও রাজত্ব তাকে তার হাতে তুলে দেওয়ার জন্য। সেইজন্যই সেই শর্ত নির্দয় হওয়া সত্ত্বেও তিনি তা মেনে নিয়েছিলেন।

Ans. For the proper upbringing of the princes, tutors were appointed to educate them properly. Their progress was rapid. They were also trained in the skills of riding and shooting with the bow.
The mendicant finally made his appearance to claim a prince, when the princes were sixteen years old.
At this, the hearts of the king and the queen seemed to dry up and it was as if they were plunged into a sea of sadness.

Ans. The mendicant could turn both the princes, the king and the queen, the palace, and, even the whole kingdom into ashes by his curse. That is why the king and the queen could not refuse to give one of the princes to the mendicant.
Both the princes were equally dear to the king and the queen. Therefore, they could not decide as to which prince they should hand over to the mendicant. It was the dilemma that they faced.
Each of the princes said that he would go. The younger reasoned that the elder should stay as he was the pride of their father. While the elder argued that the younger should stay as he was the joy of their mother. That is how the princes reacted to the situation.
There was a lot of arguments. But after much
lamentation and mourning it was decided that the younger should stay and the elder should go.

দুজন রাজপুত্রই রাজা এবং রানির কাছে সমান প্রিয় ছিল। সুতরাং কোন্ রাজপুত্র সন্ন্যাসীকে দেওয়া হবে এই একটি দ্বিধার তাঁরা মুখোমুখি হয়েছিলেন।
উভয় রাজপুত্রই উভয়েই বলেছিল যে সে যাবে। ছোটোজন যুক্তি দিয়েছিল যে বড়ো রাজপুত্রেরই বাড়িতে থেকে যাওয়া দরকার কারণ সে ছিল তার বাবার গর্ব। অপরদিকে বড়ো রাজপুত্র কারণ দেখিয়েছিল যে ছোটো রাজপুত্রেরই বাড়িতে থেকে যাওয়া দরকার কারণ সে ছিল তাদের মা-এর আনন্দ। সেই পরিপ্রেক্ষিতে এটাই ছিল রাজপুত্রদের প্রতিক্রিয়া।

Ans. Before leaving for the forest with the mendicant, the elder prince planted a tree with his own hands, in the courtyard of the palace.
At that time, he told his parents and brother that, that tree was his life. If they saw the tree to be green and fresh, they should know that everything was fine with him. However, if they saw the tree fade in some parts they should know that something was wrong with him. When they would find the whole tree fade, they should know that he was dead.
Ultimately, he kissed and embraced his parents and brother and bid them goodbye.

Ans. As he proceeded towards the forest with the mendicant, the elder prince had a dog's whelp or a puppy and a hawk's young one as his companions.
On their way to the forest, at first, the mendicant and the elder prince found some puppies on the road-side. One of the puppies expressed his wish to go with the young man whom he considered to be a prince. Its mother allowed it to go with him. At a short distance they spotted a hawk and its young ones on a tree. A young hawk asked its mother to let it go with the handsome youth whom he guessed to be the son of a king. Its mother permitted it to accompany him. That is how the elder prince got his companions.
At last, they went into the depth of the forest, far away from human-habitation and reached a leaf-thatched hut which was the mendicant's cell.
[সন্ন্যাসীর সাথে যখন সে জঙ্গলের দিকে অগ্রসর হয়েছিল, তখন বড়ো রাজপুত্র সঙ্গী হিসেবে একটি কুকুরের শাবক বা কুকুর ছানা এবং একটি বাজপাখির শাবককে পেয়েছিল।
