1. What does the word Majuli mean ? Write a few lines on the origin of Majuli.

(āĻŽাāϜুāϞী āĻļāĻŦ্āĻĻā§° āĻ…ā§°্āĻĨ āĻ•ি? āĻŽাāϜুāϞীā§° āϏৃāώ্āϟিā§° āĻŦিāώ⧟ে āϞিāĻ–া)

Ans: Originally Majuli was a narrow and long piece of land called 'Majoli',,which means land in the middle of the two parallel rivers- the Brahmaputra flowing in the north and the Burhidihing river flowing in the south.

Set amidst the mighty and the mythical male river Brahmaputra, Majuli is known as the oldest and the largest inhabited riverine island of the world. It is not just a single island with a .single parameter but it is the combination of cluster of islets formed and developed in the mid river stream of the mighty Brahmaputra. Due to the lack· of sufficient and convincing records, it is difficult to ascertain the year or the period of the creation of this river island. However, having considered certain geographical evidences and literary accounts, it can be presumed that Majuli took its island shape at least before 13 century AD. Originally the island was a narrow and long piece ofland called 'Majoli'.Frequent earthquakes in the periods 1661 to 1696, set the stage for a catastrophic flood in· 1750 which is mentioned in historical texts and reflected in folklores. As a result of this flood the river Brahmaputra split into two branches - one flowing along the original channel and the other flowing along the Buridihing channel and consequently Majuli island was formed.
