1 Describe the character and life of the Grandmother.

Ans:  The Grandmother is grey-haired, with age-worn stoop and hobbling gait. She looks frail but her voice is strong and resonant. She is almost ninety. She I was born at the tum of the century when there were no motor cars, no aeroplanes, no television, no movies, and much less noise. She was born there, in the village on the slopes of Dharmagiri ;grew up, married, and had her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She loves nature and thinks the river, trees, flowers, birds and animals as her friends. She has had a tough but happy life.

Ans: The villagers went to Sagar to explain him about their dissatisfaction with the upcoming project that not only will their village be ruined, but the mountain itself was in danger. Ans: Grandmother has lived all her life in the village on the slopes of Dharmagiri.She said that the river, trees, flowers, birds -and· animals are all her friends. The news of building a hotel in the mountain had upset her. She thought about the rabbits, the deer and partridge who are going to lose their homes. She asked who will listen to the river, the clean, beautiful, sweet watered river that will now turn foul with filth. And who will listen to the sorrow of Dharmagiri when it is massacred by roads and burdened with buildings. There will be a lot of  noise and  pollution. She also said that the mountains, the rivers, the trees and the animals, they all speak, just like people if we listen to them. She was worried about future and told that tomorrow's world is the world of today's children and the hotel may create problem for them. Thus, we can say that grandmother is simple and rustic, yet she is an environmentalist.

Ans:  Trees, forests are the integral part of our environment. In todays world due to the improvements in technology and infrastructure people easily exploit environment to fulfill their greeds. People are ruining waterbodies, mountains, forests in the name of development. In this rat race of modernism we often forget that the harms we are doing to the environment wil be repayed to us. Our earth is the only planet which is suitable for living and destroying it means destroying ourselves. To prevent the destruction of environment and greenery we can take the following measures:

i) Plant trees in large numbers and take care of them.

ii) Stop forest destruction.

iii) The authorities should impose severe punishment for destruction of forest and environment

iv) Teach children about the importance of nature and trees.

v) Elaborate use of three R's policy; reduce,reuse and recycle.
