Road Safety

1. What does road safety mean?

Answer:  Road safety refers to safe travel on roads with precautions taken to avoid any accidents while driving, riding as a passenger, riding a bicycle, walking, crossing the road, getting in and out of a car.

2. What do the four letters 'E' mean in road safety?

Answer:  The four letters of the English alphabet 'E' in road safety are-

            (a) Engineering (Technical)

            (b) Enforcement

            (c) Education (Education)

            (d) Emergency

3. Briefly explain what you mean by a helmet and why you should wear it.

Answer:  Section 129 of the Traffic Act, 1988 requires drivers and passengers of two-wheeled vehicles to wear helmets. Helmets protect the rider and accompanying rider from 40 per cent of death and 70 per cent of head injuries. As per the rules, helmets must be of the quality prescribed by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The person riding in the back of a two-wheeler is also required to wear a helmet.

       Wear a helmet. This is because helmets protect the rider and accompanying passengers from 40 percent of death and 70 percent of head injuries. Many people cause danger to themselves and others by not following road safety rules.

4. The What are seat belt requirements?

Answer:  The bodies of the driver and passengers of a car traveling at a speed of 70 km per hour also travel at a speed of 70 km per hour. When the vehicle suddenly stops, the bodies of the occupants also hit the front steering wheel, dashboard or mirror at a speed of 70 km/h as mentioned above. As a result, passengers and drivers are killed on the spot or permanently disabled. According to surveys, 70 percent of people die in accidents due to not wearing seat belts. Answer:  A driving license is a license issued by the competent authority to drive a certain class of vehicle.

Driving licenses are issued for the following categories of vehicles:

  • motorcycles without gears 
  • Disabled vehicles
  • Conveyor vehicles
  • geared motorcycles
  • light vehicles
  • Road Roller
  • Specific types of vehicles

6. Briefly describe what the traffic laws say about drunk driving.

Answer:  There are many road accidents in the world due to drunk drivers. If a person drives under the influence of alcohol, he is at risk of causing accidents to himself and others. Whether a driver is under the influence of alcohol can be easily detected by a blood test. If a driver is driving under the influence of alcohol every 100m. LTD. The blood sample contained 30 mg. If he is found to be under the influence of alcohol, he can face a fine or imprisonment or both under the traffic laws. He could even have his driving license revoked. (1) The school bus driver shall have 5 years of heavy vehicle driving experience.

(2) Drivers shall wear uniforms and shall bear the sign 'On School Duty' on the buses.

9. What should a driver do in the event of a road accident?

Answer:  The driver should stop the vehicle immediately. If it is not possible for the crowd at the scene of the accident or the injured person or his parents do not wish otherwise, take the injured to the nearest hospital for treatment. Report the accident to the nearest police station as soon as possible and inform the insurance authorities about the accident.

10. What are the valid documents to be carried in the vehicle in case of non-transport (private) vehicles?

Answer: In case of non-transport vehicles, the valid documents to be carried in the vehicle are:

  • Certificate of Registration

  • insurance

  • Controlled pollution certificate for 1 year old vehicles

  • Driving license of the class of vehicle being driven.
11. What are the main causes of road accidents?

Answer:  The main causes of road accidents are:

    According to various studies, there are various causes of road accidents. Drunk driving, speeding, sleep deprivation, bad roads, bad weather, car breakdowns, violation of road guidelines, etc. These factors can be summarized as follows.

    Human Factor:  85 percent of road accidents are caused by human error. Road accidents are caused by drunkenness, drowsiness,  misunderstanding or disobedience to road directions, driving while talking on mobile phones, negligence of pedestrians or walking incorrectly or crossing the road while talking on mobile phones

    Infrastructure Factor: Many road accidents occur due to steep roads, poor technical construction, broken roads etc.

    Mechanical Factor: Road accidents are also caused by sudden mechanical failure of a vehicle while traveling on the road, improper maintenance of the vehicle, outdated parts, etc

    Environmental Factor: Road accidents can also occur due to bad weather, adverse geographical location, sudden natural disasters even when everything is fine.


12. What is the name of the Road Safety Scheme launched in 2011 ? Briefly describe this scheme.

Answer:  The Road Safety Scheme launched in 2011 is called 'The Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2 Based on this programme, most of the countries have taken various measures to control road safety problems in a strong manner. Announced at the United Nations General Assembly in March 2010, the aim and objective of the scheme is to reduce the amount of damage caused by road accidents.

14. Write down five road rules to take while driving to ensure road safety.

Answer: The five road rules to be followed while driving to ensure road safety are:

(1) Drive a vehicle on the left side of the road as far as possible and allow vehicles coming from the opposite direction to pass on your right.

(2) Overtake a vehicle traveling in the same direction on the right.

(3) It is recommended to drive only by looking in the rearview mirror and signaling with your hands if necessary.

(4) When climbing a hill, the descending vehicle will give priority to the ascending vehicle.

(5) Do not carry any hazardous materials except lighters in your vehicle.

15. What does an expat have to do if he wants to drive abroad?

Answer:  The Traffic Act provides for the issuance of an International Driving Permit for Indian citizens to drive abroad. This license is issued for one year. To obtain a licence, the following documents are required to be submitted with the prescribed application form—

(a) Copy of Indian driving licence

(b) Copies of passports and visas

(c) Proof of good health in the prescribed form

(D) Three recent photographs

(e) Prescribed fees.
