(a) Population density-

Answer: This ratio between the area of land and the number of people is called population density.

(b) Gender structure-

Answer: The ratio of women to men in the population of a country is called gender structure. 

(c) Age structure-

Answer: The population of a country consists of people of different age groups.

(d) Structure of scholarships-

Answer: The number of people employed in various economic activities. 

(e) Population Migration-

Answer: When an area has better climate, flat land, water supply etc., people migrate from other areas to that area. 

(f) Working population-

Answer: Number of adults involved in various productive activities.

(a) What is the population of Assam according to the 2011 census?

According to the 2011 census, the population of Assam is 72.19 per cent.

(b) Which district of Assam has the highest population density?

Answer:  Kamrup Metro (1313) district of Assam has the highest population density.

(c) Which district of Assam has the lowest population density?

Dima Hasao district of Assam has the lowest population density  .

(d) What is the main reason for the population growth of Assam?

Answer: The main reason for the population growth in Assam is the birth rate higher than the death rate.

(e) Which district of Assam has the highest literacy rate?

Answer: Hailakandi district of Assam has the highest literacy rate. 

(f) Give an example of permanent population migration in Assam?

Answer: Infrastructure is an example of sustainable population migration in Assam.

3. The population density in Assam is relatively higher than the national average. What is the main reason for this? 

Answer: Flat, fertile river valleys have even distribution of population and high density due to facilities for agricultural trade and settlement and easy water supply. Urban areas are very densely populated. Most of the major cities in Assam have better transportation, education, health and income opportunities. Therefore, the population density in Assam is relatively higher than the national average.

(a) Working population

Answer: Working Population- According to the 2011 Census, the percentage of the total population in the State is actively engaged in productive activities.  The number of adults involved in various productive activities. The proportion of the working population has a significant impact on the production and economic development of a country. 

(b) Population distribution

Answer: Population distribution-   The distribution of population in a region depends on various geographical factors. The flat, fertile river valleys are usually suitable for agriculture, trade and settlement. There is also an even distribution of the population due to easy water supply. Most of the major cities in Assam have good transportation, health, education, and income opportunities. Therefore, population migration is also high. The districts of Assam with high urbanization rates are also densely populated. For example, in Kamrup Metro (1313 per sq km) 

(c) Literacy of Assam

Literacy in Assam - Educational qualifications and literacy rate are one of the most important social characteristics of the population of a country . This is where the quality of the population depends. Literacy and education depend on the quality of life of the people, efficiency, social status of women, and occupational structure. Literacy in this country refers to the educated population over 7 years of age. who can read and write as well as count. 

5. Briefly describe the gender and religious structure of the population of Assam.

The gender and religious structure of the population of Assam is discussed below :

Sex - The sex ratio determines the status or respect of women in an area. In developed countries, women have higher education rates, are healthier and self-reliant, so women have lower mortality rates. The population structure of a country is also determined by the ratio of women to men in the population. 

Religious Structure - Like most other states of India, the majority of the population in Assam is Hindu. The number and growth rate of Muslims is higher in the densely populated districts. These districts are Nagaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, Darang and Barpeta. This was mainly due to the high rate of migration from neighboring Bangladesh. 

6. What is meant by age structure ? Explain the age structure of the population of Assam according to the 2011 Census.

Answer: Age structure means the number of people of different age groups in the population of a country. Since a higher number of children means a higher birth rate. 

    According to the 2011 census, the age structure of the population of Assam was 23,63,485 male children and 22,74,645 female children in the age group of 0-6 years. The number of children of this age is higher in Morigaon (17.11 per cent), Nagaon (16.29), Goalpara (17.03), Dhubri (18.89) and Darang (16.85 per cent).

7. Explain the influence of various geographical factors on the distribution of population of Assam.

Answer: The distribution of population of Assam is influenced by various geographical factors-

    The least populated districts in Assam are Dima Hasao (44/sq km), Karbi Anglong (92/sq km) and Dhemaji (212/sq km).
