1. How did Evelyn hear music?

Answer: Evelyn could not hear music in the usual way because she had lost most of her hearing. Percussionist Ron Forbes recognised her musical ability and encouraged her to sense music through her body instead of depending on her ears. He tuned two drums to different notes and helped her discover that she could feel higher notes in the upper part of her body and lower notes below her waist.

With determination and practice, Evelyn trained herself to recognise different vibrations. While playing the xylophone, she could feel the sound passing through the sticks into her fingertips. When she leaned against drums, she sensed their vibrations throughout her body. On wooden floors, she removed her shoes so that the vibrations could pass through her bare feet. In this way, she learned to experience music through vibrations in her whole body.
