The Snake and the Mirror
I. Discuss in Pairs and answer each question below in a short paragraph (30-40 words).

1.’’The sound was a familiar one. ’’What sound did the doctor hear? What did he think it was? How many times did he hear it? (Find the places in the text.) When and why did the sounds stop?
‘’শব্দটো বৰ চিনাকী’’ডাক্তৰজন কি শব্দ শুনা পাইছিলে? তেওঁ সেইটো কি শব্দ বুলি ভাবিছিলে? কিমান বাৰ তেওঁলোকে শব্দটো শুনা পাইছিল?
Answer: The doctor heard of a familiar sound which he thought to be of rats. His room is full of rats and there was a regular traffic of rats to & from the beam. He heard the sound thrice. The sound stopped suddenly after the doctor heard a dull thud as if a rubber tube had fallen to the ground. It was a snake.
ডাক্তৰজনে এটা চিনাকী শব্দ শুনা পাইছিলে যিটো তেওঁ এন্দুৰেৰে শব্দ বুলি ভাবিছিল তেওঁৰ ঘৰটো এন্দোৰেৰে ভৰ্তি আছিল, তেওঁ শব্দটো তিনিবাৰকৈ শুনা পাইছিল, হঠাৎ শব্দটো নাইকিয়া হৈ গৈছিল আৰু ডাক্তৰজনে এটা ডাঙৰ শব্দ শুনা পাইছিল যেন এটা গধূৰ ৰবৰৰ বস্তু পকাত পৰিছে আচলতে সেইটো এটা সাপ আছিল।
2. What two “important” & “earth-shaking” decisions did the doctor take while he was looking into the mirror?

Answer: While looking into the mirror the doctor took two “important” and “earth-shaking” decisions Firstly, he decided to shave daily and grow a thin moustache. Secondly, he would always keep an attractive smile on his face.

3. “I looked into the mirror and smiled, “says the doctor. A little later he says, “I forgot my danger and smiled feebly at myself, “what is the doctor opinion about himself when: (i) he first smiles & (ii) he smiles again? In what way do his thoughts change in between and why?

Answer: (i) When the doctor first smiles, he admires his good looks and profession.
প্ৰথমবাৰ হাঁহোতে ডাক্তৰজনে নিজৰ হাঁহি আৰু ভাল লগা বাবে সন্তোষ প্ৰকাশ কৰিছিল।
(ii) When he smiles again. He actually smiles at his stupidly and poor situation.
পুনৰ বা হাঁহোতে তেওঁ দৰাচলতে নিজৰ মূখাৰ্মী আৰু পুতৌ লগা পৰিস্থিতিক লৈ হাঁহিছিল।
II. This story is about a frightening incident narrated in a humorous way. What makes it humorous? (Think of the contrasts it presents between dreams and reality. Some of them are between)

1. (i) The kind of person the doctor is (money, possessions)
ডাক্তৰজনৰ ব্যক্তিত্ব ( পইচা আৰু অধিকাৰ )
Answer: The doctor is a poor man who have no electricity in his house. He lives in a small rented room full of rat. He has about sixty rupees in his suitcase. Along with some shirts and dhatis, he have only one solitary black cat.
(ডাক্তৰজন এজন দুখীয়া মানুহ আছিলে যাৰ ঘৰত বিজুলী ব্যৱস্থা নাছিল। তেওঁ এটা সৰু ভাড়াৰ ঘৰত আছিলে য’ত ধেৰ এন্দুৰ আছিল তেওঁ ওচৰত মাত্ৰ ৬০ টকা পইচা আছিল। তেওঁৰ ওচৰত মাত্ৰ এযোৰমান কাপোৰ আৰু ধুতি আছিল। আৰু এটা মাত্ৰ ক’লা ক’ট আছিল।)

Answer:- He wants to be a handsome person. So he decided to shave daily and to grow a thin moustache. He also allices to accumulate wealth.

Answer:- He intends to marry a wealthy lady doctor having a good medical practice. He wishes to have a fat wife so that she can not run after him and catch him when he would make a mistake.
তেখেতে এগৰাকী ধনী ডাক্তৰনী বিয়া পাতিব বিচাৰিছিল । তেখেতে নিজৰ ঘৈণীয়েক শকত হোৱাটো বিচাৰিছিল যাতে তেওঁ ভূল কৰিলে খেদি দৌৰি যাব নোৱাৰে।
(ii) The person he actually marries
(তেখেতে দৰাচালতে বিয়া পতা মানুহগৰাকী )
Answer: The person he actually marries is a thin lady person with the gift of a sprinter.
তেখেতে এগৰাকী ক্ষীণ ছোৱালী।
3. (i) His thoughts when he looks into the mirror
আইনাখন চাই তেখেতে কি ভাবিছিল?
Answer:- By looking into the mirror, he decides to shave daily to look smart and retain his smile. He is happy and contented when he looks into the mirror.
আইনাখন চাই তেখেতে দাড়ি খুৰোৱা আৰু মূখত এটা হাঁহি লৈ ফুৰাৰ সিদ্ধান্ত লৈছিলে আইনাখন চাই তেখেতে আনন্দ আৰু সন্তোষ প্ৰকাশ কৰিছিলে।
(ii) His thoughts when the snake is crawled around his arm.
যেতিয়া সাপটো তাৰ বাউসীত বগাই গৈছিল তাৰ কেনেকুৱা অনুভৱ হৈছিল?
Answer:- When the snake crawled around his arm above the elbow, he kept sitting there holding his breath. He nationless and was afraid of the snake.
সাপটো তাৰ বাউসীত বগাই যাওতে সি স্থিৰ হৈ বহি আছিল উশাহটো ধৰি ৰাখিছিল আৰু সাপটোলৈ ভয় কৰিছিল।
